I think that Ukraine could have got much further when it was on a roll in the autumn of 2022 if it had the kit it has now. By 2023 that window of opportunity had closed as the Kremlin occupier was dug in and Ukraine is not about to send its men and kit into a meat grinder. This year is probably going to be much more about the political theatre of operations.

The Ukrainian government is under enormous pressure to deliver success as the war exhausts its people. Both the Belgorod attacks and hitting naval assets in Crimea serve this purpose while the Kremlin’s media war answer is to use backer nations’ public opinion to weaken resolve and strengthen opposition to staying the course. This is where spamtrolls like we have on here are deployed. I’d have thought this is totally obvious stuff by now.

There are already a lot of rumors of Putin wanting a ceasefire. That doesn’t sound like someone who thinks they can defeat Ukraine as it stands."

What are the Ruskies actually trying to achieve apart from turning thousands of young Russians into mince meat? Russia should've grabbed the European wide influence it could've had. Instead it got the bow n arrows. Ukraine isn't a bastion of honesty and virtue but they're the one being attacked so it's half expected that even a slippery money grabbing government can mobilise their men to fight. But for what? Russian speaking enclaves? Access to the Black Sea? Still feels a bit like the US are enjoying this safe distance proxy war watching Russian mug itself off at the same time proving Russia will get fucked in a ground war with NATO proper.

The way Ukraine keep pushing back that Russian naval fleet is the real story. Ukrainian success depends on invading Crimea. They just keep concentrating on knocking out artillery and supply lines whilst Russia’s tactic (as always) is to scare the civilians in cities so much that it forces Ukraine to give up. I honestly think Russia for all its years fighting people has no real answer for a well armed nato type force. Nothing has gone to plan for them. Nothing. All they can do is try desperately to control their media and the perception of things. If the USA under Trump stop aid it will not stop the problem as Europe will have to take over. The war will not be over until Ukraine can secure Odessa and the southern ports. Which means getting into Crimea. I think once that happens EU/Nato will station in southern Ukraine and Russia can have Donbas.
