Re: Do you believe in God?
You can believe in anything you like. I'm merely putting the logical and scientific argument plus a bit of philosophy. If there is no evidence for 96% of all the energy in the universe and yet scientists believe it why shouldn't someone believe in God?

Re: Do you believe in God?
"That's exactly right Mike Oxsaw. It's not up to me to prove that something that doesn't exist doesn't actually exist. And BRANDED you are wrong yet again. I will not be praying to god on my deathbed because I'm bloody sure he doesn't exist. Contrary to popular belief on WHO that won't be anytime soon... Funnily enough I spoke to a friend's father last year who is 94 (and still a smoker.) He brought up the subject of himself dying before too long to talk about my friend's inheritance. I asked him if he believed in god and his response was ""Do fuck off!"""

Re: Do you believe in God?
Belief in God (THEIR GOD) makes someone a better person? Like those lovely Palestinians and Jews. Defined by their religion & belief in their God trying to massacre the other lot with the 'wrong' God The Catholic Church is/was the biggest paedophile ring in the world. All the godly types abusing children. I asked one of those Oxford St megaphone God botherers what his God was up to with Covid. Didnt have an answer so suggested he might be a bit bored giving kids cancer.

Re: Do you believe in God?
In the current most popular scientific theory of cosmology for the equations to work they have made up something called dark matter. For it also to work Dark matter has to be something like 82% of the entire universe. And yet it has never once been observed and there is no proof of its existence. Perhaps its God?

Re: Do you believe in God?
"There's absolutely zero proof that a god - any god - exists except as a figment in several (million) people's imagination. People who believe that there is a god are taking someone else's word for it without question. 100% up to the believers to prove it/he/she exists, not up to the non-believers to prove he doesn't."

Re: Do you believe in God?
"We are a rules and law based society. That said we have huge amounts of religious influence upon us and have a King with his own religion ( no, I'm not talking about climate change). We have a huge number of devout Muslims with Muhammad being the most popular boys name in the UK now and for ever. Even though we mostly have either an agnostic or atheist religion almost all of them would pray to god for saviour in a plane crash and not be working out the probabilities of survival on a calculator."
Re: Do you believe in God?
", Some good points there. But once again, the thread has moved into religion, away from a belief in God. What is so difficult about keeping on-topic?"
Re: Do you believe in God?
"The overwhelming number of people who are devoutly religious follow the religion they were born in to. This indicates that a child is more or less indoctrinated into a set of religious beliefs. Many think that this is wrong but the believers, who are certain of their faith, can see nothing wrong with a child being “put on the correct path”. Right now we have a PM who does not “do” God and that is ok by me. Rather that than a PM like IDS or JRM for example who could have given us rule from Rome."

"Willtell 10:46 Wed Dec 13 ""I am quite open to admit being wrong"" hahahahaha - laugh of the day, that. Cheers 'tell."
Re: Do you believe in God?
"Wils wrote... I don't believe I have ever made that claim. (about religion making someone a better person). Here is what you said earlier minus the irrelevant parts Wils. ""Whether God exists or not...your life by most metrics will be better....So you may have convinced yourself that you are right that he doesn't exist, but the absence of religion in your life is going to expose you a greater chance of being miserable and bad things happening in your life..."" Wils you are obviously a believer and I accept that. But you openly make a lot of assumptions about those that do not have faith. Atheism isn't a fashion statement mate. It's a deep seated conviction that god does not exist after years of being indoctrinated by an education system tied into teaching teh Christian religion when I was a child. It took reasoning and courage of my convictions as an adult to be an atheist. I am quite open to admit being wrong if someone can show me one clear piece of unquestionable evidence that he/she does exist. So why does god still need to hide his light under a bushel and keep his existence an open secret?"

"we seem to be drifting back to debating religion - and, in particular, focusing on only one example of such a concept. Can we go back to the actual subject of the original post and take religion out of the equation?"

Re: Do you believe in God?
"Nothing wrong with a belief in God as long as it doesn’t get shoved down your throat, right?"
Re: Do you believe in God?
"""I don’t recognise Wils assertion about religion making someone a better person although I accept that it should."" I don't believe I have ever made that claim. And the rest of your post, in my view, displays a lack of understand what a profession of faith is. Especially a Christian one which is the example you give. Someone who believes in a Christian God is first and foremost accepting their own fallibility. They are ""sinners"" looking for redemption and striving to do what they think is right. That they fall short - repeatedly - is no reflection on the validity of their beliefs. After all, we all do things we know we shouldn't and fail to live up to our own expectations whether we believe in God or not. What marks out a Christian is what he believes is right and wrong and not his ability to live up to those beliefs. Having Christian beliefs is by definition an act of humility and an admission of imperfection. Mike Oxsaw 8:33 Tue Dec 12 ""Wouldn't that imply that a person with no - or fewer - beliefs is actually, mentally, a stronger person?"" It would depend on their reason for not believing. My wife is a die-hard atheist but she believes, like I do, that religion is a positive thing and our lives are richer for it. So she attends church and brings our children up Catholics. For her, yes her lack of belief makes her mentally a stronger person because she is very aware her own beliefs are to her detriment and she thinks the more atheists there are the worse the worlds is. But she also knows that is not a reason for her to believe something is true when she honestly thinks it isn't. But that's her. For most atheists they think their life is better because of their atheism and they think the world is better the more atheists there are. They are also very likely to think it's social death to announce to their friends and family that they are Christians or Muslims so they wear their atheism like a badge (""And I am glad...""). So there is a very strong social incentive for most atheists to be atheist. I don't think these people are mentally stronger becuase of it."
