Sadly, the neocons got hold of it and a bunch of 'nutjobs' embarked on a course of aggression and expansion, looking to surround Russia's borders in Europe and the Caucuses (not sure how Georgia and Turkey could defend the North Atlantic, but that's geography for you). Whilst there were neutral buffer states between NATO and Russia there was very little risk of accidental confrontation, but obviously that didn't suit the US and EU who ultimately believe Russia is too large and has control of too many resources that they need."
