General Election - July 2024

This appears to be the rumour on Sky. An easy win for Starmer and some big names losing their seats. The Country needs a change but is it going to get one? The thought of seeing that annoying Beth Rigby for 6 weeks though is a horrifying thought.

Nobody’s denying you the right to an opinion or form a consensus around it. Certainly not me - take all the time and space you need to convince anyone sensible you have absolutely nothing to offer.

"Also, so what if it’s a bigger percentage of Reformers and Tories supporting it? Remember what you said yesterday, about everyone being entitled to an opinion? Are they not allowed one then? I know you love getting involved in British politics Pickle, but FYI we don’t live in a fascist state."

"Take a look on the bright side, Twundle Now that the government is backed by a stable majority voted in by the more compos-mentis, capable and less uptight section of society, you can look forward to plenty of opportunities to demonstrate just how thick, useless and cranky you are in opposition. Happy days."

"I said there was a consensus for a ban on expansion, which is different from the consensus. Anyway, I note the for camp is very much the Tory vote and, interestingly the article tells me “There are also divides based on other individual characteristics. Most notably, opposition is higher among Remain (53%) than Leave (16%) voters and those with a university degree (51%) than without (24%) a degree. Conversely, support is higher among those who voted Leave (56%) rather than Remain (29%) and those who do not have a university degree (42%) compared to those who do (35%).”"

"What many don't/refuse to accept that oil is not just (JUST) used for transport & heating/electricity generation. There are hundreds - maybe thousands - of (raw) oil variants, each useful in variety of applications after processing. The morons at ""Stop Oil"" (and those with ANY sympathy for them) are likely to be in for a shock when we lose access to the flavour of oil beneath the North Sea, let alone specialist oils from elsewhere. And, electric cars. Don't the batteries make them (much) heavier than their petrol.diesel powered equivalents? Who's going to pay for all the extra maintenance that the roads will need on account of unanticipated extra wear? We moan enough already about the current state of many roads."

Zeb - any growth in global supply will have an impact on price. The UK is only about 1.5% of global oil consumption so +1% of global supply is not immaterial. Add to that a shorter supply chain and less risk - all means a movement in price.

goose 1:56 Fri Jul 12 No it won't. Fossil fuels are priced on the global market and any UK production will be a small fraction of 1% of the global supply. Even the Tories admitted this.

"I'd the majority of people in this country own cars and heat their house. And most people would prefer for that to be cheaper. Binning North Sea oil doesn't help with that, in fact it'll do the opposite."

"Fourpence, of those eligible to vote, 1 in 5 people voted Labour. Fair enough, that's the nature of our system but it's hardly a popular mandate. Sorry ray, I don't read the mail. Zeb, no matter how it's viewed, fact is we will still be using huge amounts of oil regardless of where it comes from."

"It is not our oil or gas. It might be in our waters but the developers sell it on the international market. The days when this country actually kept these assets for domestic use finished in the 1970s. Rosebank, for instance, is going to be developed by a company owned by the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund."

It's part of their election pledge to end new North Sea oil exploration. Kind of thing that happens when a government is elected by a popular mandate in a democracy you know. Might as well try to work out what people's thinking really is about this oil we MUST have according to some.

"I see Ed Milliband has got off to a flying start by revoking all the new licences on offer to companies drilling for north sea oil. Great idea, let's spend billions importing the stuff we MUST have rather than discovering our own."
