The term 'must win' is often used in circumstances where it's not quite true.  Is Forest at home a must win game?  Maybe, maybe not.  But 100% it's a must not lose game.  A win puts us within touching distance of a Forest side in the aftermath of their own little managerial change honeymoon period.  A loss....and 17th place starts to look a very long way away indeed.

We go into this game with some comings and goings in the squad.  Luis Guilherme has departed for Sporting.  Callum Wilson is negotiating an exit (no doubt he sees the writing on the wall with two striker signings coming in, and the 6k basic he's on starting to look like all he'll be getting most weeks).  Pablo and Taty Castellano are now in and training with the squad, and both seemingly well known or attacking their duels and fighting hard....and my word do we need some of that.

There's been no news surrounding Todibo and Paqueta for this one.  Paqueta's being a back injury, it's feasible a spasm could have subsided with some intensive physio...but with Todibo's being a groin injury, that feels less likely to make a swift disappearance with the usual sources reporting he needed a scan, but no outcomes.

And then there is the aftermath of the Wolves debacle.  Potts and Magassa got hooked at half time.  Soucek came in and looked slow but competent.  Wilson played 90 mins and is still currently here.  Myers came on and looked a million miles better than either of the other CB proponents...but surely we won't get a start as one of a back two?!  Plus there's the two new guys. The starting line up is suddenly anyone's guess.

Predicted Line Up:

But guess I will.  This is my hunch as to what Nuno will go for:
Areola

KWP  Mavropanos  Kilman  Scarles

Soucek   Potts

Bowen   Castellanos   Fernandes

Pablo
Subs: Hermansen, Igor, Myers, Magassa, Kante, Rodriguez, Sumerville, Paqueta, Wilson

If Paqueta is fit to start, I expect Taty to move up top, Paqueta to come in on the left, and Pablo to sit on the bench.  Mavropanos and Kilman seem likely to continue their Keystone Cops impression, mostly for lack of alternatives, with Igor clearly not rated, Myers thought more of as a fullback or wide in a 3 (he's not very physically imposing yet) and Todibo likely still out.  Lastly I suspect Magassa will be made scapegoat, with Potts getting some nepo treatment (although he's been poor of late) and Soucek coming in for some 'old stager presence' and 'leadership' in the middle of the park.

Predicted Score:

After that last result, it feels impossible to predict a win.  Forest will low-block us, and have pace to burn on the flanks.  Something we clearly struggle with, but with both teams no doubt considering a defeat more damaging than anything else, I expect a cagey affair that ends in stalemate.

West Ham 1 - 1 Nottingham Forest

Is a point enough to save Nuno?  Or is 50m spent on a couple of strikers the real saving grace for the bald Portugeezer?  Time will tell.  He likely doesn't care either way.

COYI.

Agree with all that although would slightly add he still makes goals happen when he's on the pitch. A rare thing for our Team.

What do the coaching staff drill into Summerville all week? - How to run down blind alleys constantly with your head down? How not to make off the ball runs to create space? How to never mark anyone when tracking back? It's baffling. Then we have the zonal marking from set pieces. It doesn't work. We flood the box with everyone not marking anyone and have no out ball. And I just feel sorry for poor Soucek now - he's all heart but moves like he's using a walking frame

Absolute gash. Second to everything, piss easy to play through, clueless with the ball, no movement, can’t string three passes together. Get ball, panic, hoof it, lose it, defend again. Complete fucking shit. We were battered to be frank.

Our players are visibly getting worse and worse game by game. All of them. It’s just beyond bad. Relegation is a certainty. Might as well sack Nuno tbh after that.

If anyone needed anymore evidence about Nunos clueless subs. It was mindblowing as he was 1 of our best players on the pitch. 🤯
It was clear in the ground that he'd taken a knock. He was down on his haunches for half a minute before Mayers was told to strip off. Perhaps it wasn't obvious on TV
Ah fair, I didn't see that. My eye lids were probably frozen over by that point

That's fair enough if that really was the case then. I did ask at the time if he was injured as it definitely wasn't clear on the telly.
Scarles was excellent but I think Mayers offered more offensively. Didn't understand the sub at the time but the boy did well going forward tbf

He ain't no left back...in my eyes I see him as a deep lying left sided centre mid who can keep the ball moving. He's doing his best at left back but I don't think it's his best position.
I’d like to see him in front of Diouf instead of Summerville.

Seeing as we also drew 2-2 to Brighton at Home recently only 2 games ago, I'd still not be convinced we win that even going 2-1 up. We just aint got that ruthless killer instinct in us whilst this chump manages us.

The referee was diabolical and who was it getting dragged down the tunnel after the penalty decision ?

They should of let him lose to smash up the VAR equipment as it would probably of got the biggest cheer of the night.

The two new forwards aren't going to be the answer and Bowen will remain the biggest attacking threat but it wont be nearly enough.

Loads and loads of empty seats and as we run out of road the numbers will diminish further.

People have simply had enough and voted with their feet.

RIP West ham united

we had most of the game. There’s goals were so soft.
It just feels like destiny sometimes.  No matter what you do your fucked.

whats that film.. final destination!
feels like that.

you think employing a manager as bad as this was destiny?

Oh don’t be fucking silly.
on paper he was a good appointment.
by destiny I mean we’ve been getting away with poor decisions at this club forever. And now it feels like even if we got Pep in and got Mbappe and Dembele we’d still lose. It’s just our time to go down.

today the amount of times the ref gave fouls against us. Didn’t give us anything. Missed blatant handballs etc. it was just crazy. Summerville of all people scores a goal and I’m thinking fucking hell why didn’t I buy a lottery ticket…

and then at the end of it. We lose 2-1.

it’s just mental. We didn’t even play terribly. It’s just isn’t meant to be.
on toilet paper, wiping my backside was he a fucking good appointment. he's friends with a powerful agent, otherwise he never gets a job

Well that was painful. Once again couldn't defend a lead. Didn't really deserve to win but didn't deserve to lose.
Maybe time to have a swing at it and give Slav a go?

zico wrote: 06 Jan 2026, 22:33 Mex they just explained it on Sky. The rules state if the defender kicks the ball not knowing where it's going then it's not a deliberate touch so it's offside, I Think!. Bizarre but true considering it's a deliberate tackle. Strange to me also is how you get phases of play with handball but not with offside. It was several passes before the goal. So technically correct but bollocks all the same.

But Summerville is not even trying to pass the ball, he's trying to go round the defender

I don't think I have ever see a bigger fix in my life. The Summerville goal , he has not even tried to pass the ball, he's trying to go past the defender and the defenders tackle puts out to Taty ( who was awful) Then we had two blatent fouls on Pablo and Bowen on the edge of the box and we get nothing. Then the penalty, Soucek cleared the ball. The Ariola goes into him. Gibbs-White is also offside when the free kick comes in. This ref as a cսnt all night
