Hardly surprising we've gone back to freshly relegated Burnley to buy their winger after Cornet worked out so well when we did it last time.

"I think there will be a pause in serious firm offers this week (maybe striker and another centre-back apart). Lopetegui will be making final judgements on who he wants to keep e.g, Downes Ings Coufal etc, and what youngsters he can use based on what he sees out in Austria. After which firm offers will be made for the targets that are lined up,"

"onesideman Point taken and agreed, that makes sense. It's not that it's a bad or overpriced signing as such, but yes perhaps some of the excited is on hold until we see the depth of the squad improve. I think the likes of Ineacho and Zaha is just (hopefully) lazy journalism. They reak of DS / DM style transfers and they don't sound like the sort of signing we would expect from Steidten. Time will tell, I guess."

"Got a feeling this Turkish LB won’t be as pumped up when playing in a foreign league. Be nice to be proved wrong though as he is some player, so long may it continue as long as that club is not a PL club I detest, of which there are a good few."

Not sure I want Iheanacho. I really hope he isn’t going to be out starting striker.

"I think you're missing the point Scott What I was saying is that concerns about the depth and quality of the squad are probably tempering the enthusiasm for this signing. It was a suggestion as to why the reaction has been so reserved. If all those other gaps are plugged before the end of the window I'm sure that most fans will be totally behind it. For the rest of the window I want to see Steidten earn his corn... not rumoured interest in Wilson, Zaha etc"

"Chrisel 11:29 Sat Jul 6 Re: Official Transfer rumours and gossip thread I think onsideman is right. If we had bought a decent RB, a new LW and striker THEN bought Kilman for £40m. We'd be far more impressed with our purchases. ""We've filled all these gaps and the board are still spending £40m on a defender the new manager really wants, even though he's maybe not worth the money. They're really backing him"" --- That's not how it works though. The manager wanted Killman and he was available, does the board tell him to wait until he has filled the other positions? We've dithered so much in the past, and scrimped on transfer fees to the point that it's driven us mad and we've missed out on players - then been forced to fight for scraps in the final few weeks and days of the transfer window. Here we are, backing the manager on his priority signings, getting big deals done early and still we're not happy. Let's not jump to conclusions about what this means for other transfers when there is still about 2 months of the window left to fill the gaps."

Walker Peters said last season that he enjoyes playing with Downes and was desperate to play with him again this season (for Saints I would imagine) so bringing WP in and keeping Downes would make sense. Downes fits perfectly into the Lop possession style of play and he should be a must keep unless we buy someone better in the position. Garcia would have been that player but there are other priorities in the squad now when we have Downes to fill that role.

"Nagel 12:38 Sat Jul 6 I guess it's about player profile. He'll be 29 in 5 months and if you strip out the one season in Turkey and last year in Spain, his stats are all unremarkable. Was last season a flash in the pan or is he a later developing gem? We'll see... although his €30m plus release clause may end the debate before it's begun"

Walkee Peters will improve us at RB. Watched him for Southampton a few times and he was usually their best player. He’s quick and good technically. Like Kilman in his prime and last year of his contract so Southampton will need to drop the asking price a bit especially because he reportedly wants the move. Downes looks like he’s being assessed by Loppy so not necessarily going back to the Saints?

"""I read today we're interested in Sorloth, a 28 year old who previously scored in 16 for Crystal Palace."" Yeah, he didn't have a great time at Palace, back when he was 22, although he was sold 2 years later for double the money they paid, after a very good loan spell in Turkey. More relevantly, he scored 23 goals in La Liga last year (including 6 goals vs Real Madrid & Barcelona). People shouldn't get too hung up on historical stats anyway. He's exactly the sort of player who would fit into Lopetegui's preferred method of pumping crosses into the box, and might be a better fit than someone who scored dozens of goals for Crystal Palace or whoever."

"I'd still like us to go for Ivan Toney, fancy he's be a good fit for us, or maybe Jonathan David. Then again, there's probably plenty out there who could fit the bill then I/we wouldn't know much about."

"Not really sure I get your point in Diop being 21 when he signed. That means the comparison is completely unproven with minimal experience in the French league vs 27 year old in his prime, named captain of a Premier League club by two managers, and plenty of Premier League experience. That surely explains the transfer fee uplift? It’s also six years later when all fees are higher. What do I think he’ll bring? I think he will be a solid centre half who in theory will hold that position for 5 years or so. We’ve tried the other options with limited success. Mostly though, I just think people should let him kick a ball first. It’s only money."

I’ll reserve my judgment until the end of the window. We still need: Centre forward Left side forward Right back And Paqueta replacement if he leaves.

"Good assessment Stubbo. We need a solid CB who is not too slow and comfortable on the ball but also competes physically. We also had to be mindful of home grown quotas and in Kilman also have a player the new coach trusts and knows. A good team is built on a solid defence and good CBs are a cornerstone. Think how Van Dyke transformed a “leaky” Liverpool team when he arrived. We paid 10 million extra tham we all would have liked or find reasonable. Overpaying on one position is ok and wont matter if he helps majorly improve our goals conceded record. I also hae hope for the Greek fella. He had some decent games but suffered from a few gaffes ( own goal, poor pass backs gifting goals). He has pace and is ok on the ball so think he may well improve. But we do need good another CB to cover injuries etc. If we can get north of 20 million for Aguerd that will help. Zouma we are stuck with I think due to his wages"

""We've filled all these gaps and the board are still spending £40m on a defender the new manager really wants, even though he's maybe not worth the money. They're really backing him"" Is £40m a bit overpriced, probably, though I've given up truly trying to understand player values. I can accept us overpaying if we still have money left over for the other squad issues, less acceptable if that's all our budget. Whilst a little concerned by value, I'm prepared to wait to see rest of transfer activity before making a judgement. Let's face it, we've moaned about not doing deals early and messing around with low-ball offers. It's almost as though we're never happy."

"If Kilman plays as first choice CB under Lopetegui, and Lopetegui brings success to the club, then Kilman is likely to have been a success. Spurs had to pay 40m for Van de Ven last year, who whilst younger was also largely an unknown. As long as having spwnt the money on Kilman, we still get the other players we need and it hasn't fucked us for budget, then this is no more than an accounting issue for Sully and Scarf to deal with. If the bloke is first choice for the next 4 seasons, he'll have justified his fee in all likelihood. I for one look forward to having a centre back who doesn't shit himself with the ball at his feet when pressed, playing in a team that doesn't just pump it aimlessly into the channels to chase. Kilman is about fitting the style and supporting the change of footballing philosophy as much as anything else. Good luck to the lad, good luck to Devo with the income he gets as a result."

Zoumas knee is fucked & Aguerd seemingly wants out while Kehrer has been bombed out. With a defence that conceded 74 goals we need changes I think Mavro can improve & that Kilman has obviously impressed the manager who made him Wolves captain A 27yo (peak for a centre half) Premier league captain who has a good injury record Need another centre half from the list linked plus Walker Peters & the left back linked & we will be much improved defensively
