May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.
Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

Like others I wondered if JWP might be a makeweight in a deal for Fernandes but perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that he’s very much part of Potter’s plans since Potter values above all else character, teamwork, team spirit, the group’, good lads getting along together. That’s the culture he builds- Bowen’s been used to brief the press about how cohesive and happy everyone is. Füllkrug is on board with this too now. I must admit I like it. Potter seems an affable chap and he’s putting together a likeable team. The only problem is if we get turned over in the first two games it probably all evaporates. Here’s hoping nice guys win. I’d probably prefer playing for Potter than a miserable demanding aggressive bastard like Alex Ferguson but if you want to win things….
I’ve noticed he’s brought in another keeper to challenge Areola and probably be no.1. I think thats quite a serious thing to do in terms of team harmony etc. But he also doesn’t seem to be interested in getting someone in to challenge JWP or replace him, something anyone would say is needed. I think he definitely favours “character” above competence and skill.
Maybe that works out I dunno. I think at the highest level the best players can be bastards and annoy each other. It’s just the nature of top level sport. Maybe for a mid level team harmony and peace is wonderful, but for reaching the top, there’s generally some friction in those teams.
I don't think you've been paying attention. Our owner isn't aiming for the top...he is happy with 17th place. Any better than that it's despite his leadership and not because of it.
If after 15 years we still have no plan, no purpose other than to put a team together in a haphazard, Frank Spencer fashion then it will always be what it is.
The fact is after 15 years and an average gate of 60,000 he is still desperately trying to avoid paying players a wage through the summer because the cash flow situation is so fucking poor due to the fact he can't embrace the future.
Clubs like Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton are making him look like the mug he really is and the combined capacity of their stadium capacities fits snuggly into our 62,500 or whatever it is.
So it obvious then...to compete properly the way players are recruited needs to be done better than behaving like it's still 1993 when Ken Bates economics were still all the rage.
That is all...I drink my tea

Can't find any concrete sources about Makua. Just click bait.

Yes, you'd have to give the club a pat on the back if all that business gets done, and you'd have to call it a 'win' for Potter and Macauley and what their aims are. There doesn't seem to be a lot of potential drawback with those players. Yes Fernandes won't be cheap but he's proven.
I think he gets one of the midfielders as I said yesterday, then has to put up with a Sullivan special for the other. As for the striker, coin flip. Probably Sullivan says 'you can only have the striker if you compromise on one of the midfielders. Here's Jonjo Shelvey on a three year deal'

A few posters on here noticed and remarked on how good the no 17 was for Lille on Saturday, then we saw links to Mukau at Lille and so it seems Macaulay and Potter noticed too.
We need 2 central midfielders not one so Fernandes and this geezer would be great. Mukau is more of a Kante type player with defensive instincts so complements Fernandes well since he is more attack minded. Both of them are a lot quicker than we have and pass accurately, press well, track back etc. according to scouting data?
Sullivan is still the concern though especially with Josh Brownhill available for free and both he and Jacob Ramsay being on Salthouse's books. I personally am not so keen as many on Ramsay as he seems better suited to, and has mostly played in, a wide role?
Anyway, leaving it this late to get the weakest area of the team sorted is so typical of West Ham and our little wannabe depot owner.
Agree, adding Fernandes and Makua to the squad in this window would actually elevate this window to quietly brilliant. Getting Gueye from Metz would make it more overtly brilliant. Seems funny to say that now after what has been another window where, so far, main weaknesses (striker and box to box midfielder) have not been resolved.
My concern in that we aren't dynamic enough in the transfer market and so both will drag on and on right to the death and both clubs will end up not selling as they can't replace. Soton has valued Fernandes at £30m, Lille have valued Makua at £17m and Lille have valued Gueye at £14m. So its a large pay out of £61m if you go for all three.
We haven't got the money from I understand. So there will be alot of haggling. But for £60m, look what you get. Do we sell Paqueta and use that money?

Destructive, Desperate, Disgusting we're spoilt for choice in describing our toxic Owner.

Lopetegui was his pick and the bloke considered himself such a genius he thought he only needed players with technical ability but zero pace and capacity to cover ground quickly in the Prem.
From one narcissist to another they made a right pig's ear of last summer and now we've fucked for a good few years more because of it.
Lopetegui has always been a strange fucking fish - his father was a champion weightlifter which is pretty narcissistic in itself. As for our diminutive chairman - well, we all know that story also writes itself.
This is no way to run a football club.

I still get a feeling there's a bit of emperors new clothes with Potter.
It's almost like the last half of the previous season has completely been forgotten about and everything is going brilliantly.
We still have exactly the same useless defence and midfield that were so poor last season.

I should think Potter gets one of his choice and then a Sullivan choice or Brownhill to make do with

I saw that too. We went cheap in CM and paid the price. Although to be fair I will say we should have seen a bit better from those players we had
Wasn't cheap though, loan fees, signing on fee and massive wages for Soler and Guido probably came to more.
Good point. Not even cheap. Very short sighted though. Pretty glad they were short deals, but deals that just set the team back,.
A complete fuck up by Loppy. I still can’t believe how inept that guy was in thinking those two players were what our midfield needed. We’ve made some shit signings over the years but I’d put these two pretty high that last in terms of exactly not what we needed this time last year.

'West Ham preparing opening bid for Saints midfielder Fernandes'
West Ham are preparing an opening bid for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to The Guardian.
It is claimed the Hammers have made the 21-year-old their top target after assessing several midfielders, including Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey and Lille’s Ngal’ayel Mukau.
The report says the Portugal U21 international would cost about £30m with the Premier League club optimistic a deal can be struck with the Championship side.
West Ham boss Graham Potter is reportedly looking to add energy and creativity in midfield.
Hope we do get him, but waiting a year has probably cost us 15 million quid....

5 days to go to we kick off and our midfield looks as slow and shit as it did last year.
Yup there is no excuse for not acting on this position until a week before the start of the season. Feels like Sullivan has just waited and waited to see if anyone else bids for any of our targets (Fernandes, Hermansen) before the low offer goes in. I get it in that you'll get it for a few mill less as there's no competition, probably and you avoid paying wages all summer as well, but the player won't be properly integrated into the team or up to speed with their teammates at all, and what if someone else swoops in and nicks him? We'd be in all sorts.
Anyyway if the plan all along was to get him and we end up getting him for a decent price then ok, but it just seems frugality at the cost of performance at least the first few weeks of the season while the player gets to grips with things and the rest of the squad get used to them. Meanwhile Potter's had to do all of preseason without key parts of what he wants.
