"West Ham United is delighted to announce the signing of Mexico international Edson ?Ålvarez. The 25-year-old has joined the Hammers on a permanent contract until June 2028 for an undisclosed fee, after the Club fought off strong competition from other top European clubs to bring him to London Stadium. A strong and versatile midfielder, ?Ålvarez moves to English football from Dutch club Ajax, where he won two Eredivisie titles, and less than a month after winning his second CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico. Capped 69 times by his country, ?Ålvarez has extensive European experience with Ajax and is now looking forward to playing Premier League and UEFA Europa League football with West Ham. ‚ÄúI am very happy and very proud to be here,‚Äù said ?Ålvarez, who speaks fluent English after learning the language during his four-year stay in Amsterdam. ‚ÄúBeing here in London and seeing London Stadium, it‚Äôs amazing. I can‚Äôt wait to play here in front of the West Ham fans. ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career. To join a club like a West Ham is a dream for me and my family. ‚ÄúThe Premier League is a special league, the best league in the world and I think my style will suit it. I now have a responsibility to West Ham and the West Ham family and I will give absolutely everything for the shirt.‚Äù Manager David Moyes is looking forward to working with a player who ranked first in ball carry distance and second in pass attempts in the Eredivisie last season. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôre really pleased to add Edson to our squad,‚Äù he said. ‚ÄúThe midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer ‚Äì and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department. ‚ÄúHe‚Äôs an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôre excited about welcoming to West Ham and seeing him play his part in English and European competition for the Club.‚Äù ?Ålvarez will wear the 19 shirt at West Ham United."

At least his (two) agents were on the flight too. Very sensible precaution to ensure airworthy plane. Came in from Amsterdam by all accounts so I expect TS had a pleasant weekend there...

I hope it wasn't a plane chartered by an agent.

"So the scarf went all the way to Mekiko to pick him up? That's very civil of him. I hope he painted a good picture of Canary Wharf and Rush Green on the flight back. Doubt we'll see him for a while, that's Alvarez not Steidten."

Ron Eff 1:14 Sounds pretty accurate to me! How to spot a non Moyes signing- minimal game time and trash talked every time they do get any. We're so fucking dysfunctional it's untrue.

As Alvarez seems to be a TS signing what is the betting that he spends the first six months on the bench watching Soucek and McTominay floundering in front of Maguire... I don't suppose we will see much of him until Moyes is sacked on 31 January 2024 having spent the rest of any transfer budget on Eric Dier.

Pictured on a private jet with Steidten who looks like the cat who’s got the cream. Look forward to Moyes easing him in then criticising him in every post match interview because he wasn’t his signing.

"Bloke is only 25 and has been involved in two WC's for Mexico. His first Mexico cap was when he was only 20 and has been in every squad since. Played 100 games for Ajax in 3 seasons and so was an ever present. He's also nicknamed 'La Machina' by the Mexicans. So just on that alone he's worth every penny. We had The Terminator, now we've got The Machine."

"There is definitely a risk with him, but on a positive a DM is a specialized position with a basic skill set where you are just good at the basics, so if he's good at that in Holland then it shouldn't be that difficult to do his stuff here. Just be a shield and play the simple ball. It's not like you are signing a striker from the Dutch league and then asking him to score a hat full of goals in the PL."

Rice can run all day. Essential to a prem footy player. Run run run run run. Thats the key.

Just read the article below on him and he does sound like a promising signing. We can’t replace Rice but he should give us a lot defensively and help to protect the back four. https://theanalyst.com/eu/2023/08/edson-alvarez-ajax-ball-progression-and-midfield-steel-what-you-get/

"A friend of mine, a fellow hammer of course, lives in Holland. His boys are Ajax fans, apparently they don't rate him, said he was pretty poor last year on a poor Ajax team. Doesn't mean much of course it's just their opinion but don't be surprised if he disappoints. That is all."

"Soucek has had 3 seasons with us. His first season we thought he was decent coming into the side and saw us improve and him scoring 9 or 10 goals which always means you get highly rated. He was still slow and technically inept but tge goals mask that. Teams and managers worked us and him out. He has been abject, useless the last 2 seasons in the Premiership. The odd defensive header or long leg last ditch tackle aside he is carried thru games. Lovely fella, gives his all but simply not quick enough for the Premiership or technically skilled enough to pass accurately. He was one of many, many one season wonders we’ve all seen at teams in the Premiership down the years. He’s not the source of all our problems but a significant one when it comes to getting and keeping the ball. Some progress will have been made when he is no longer a regular first 11 starter in the league."
