"West Ham United is delighted to announce the signing of Mexico international Edson ?Ålvarez. The 25-year-old has joined the Hammers on a permanent contract until June 2028 for an undisclosed fee, after the Club fought off strong competition from other top European clubs to bring him to London Stadium. A strong and versatile midfielder, ?Ålvarez moves to English football from Dutch club Ajax, where he won two Eredivisie titles, and less than a month after winning his second CONCACAF Gold Cup with Mexico. Capped 69 times by his country, ?Ålvarez has extensive European experience with Ajax and is now looking forward to playing Premier League and UEFA Europa League football with West Ham. ‚ÄúI am very happy and very proud to be here,‚Äù said ?Ålvarez, who speaks fluent English after learning the language during his four-year stay in Amsterdam. ‚ÄúBeing here in London and seeing London Stadium, it‚Äôs amazing. I can‚Äôt wait to play here in front of the West Ham fans. ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career. To join a club like a West Ham is a dream for me and my family. ‚ÄúThe Premier League is a special league, the best league in the world and I think my style will suit it. I now have a responsibility to West Ham and the West Ham family and I will give absolutely everything for the shirt.‚Äù Manager David Moyes is looking forward to working with a player who ranked first in ball carry distance and second in pass attempts in the Eredivisie last season. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôre really pleased to add Edson to our squad,‚Äù he said. ‚ÄúThe midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer ‚Äì and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department. ‚ÄúHe‚Äôs an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date. ‚ÄúWe‚Äôre excited about welcoming to West Ham and seeing him play his part in English and European competition for the Club.‚Äù ?Ålvarez will wear the 19 shirt at West Ham United."

"Alex G - if him joining forces Soucek to the bench rather than on the pitch, now that is what I call shrewd, shame Moyes is an intellectual gimp.."

"kylay wrote... Re: Edson ?Ålvarez I don't like this. He has only ever played in Mexico and Eredivisie, neither of which are leagues known for robust defending. I really hope I'm wrong. Barrera and Chicharito didn't pull up any trees in their time here either. Played 25 times in the ECL... and nigh on 70 times for his country... not too many if any of our current players have got a CV like that"

Alex G 7:46 Mon Aug 7 I can't see him being anything but a DM. Good in the air but a couple inches shorter than Soucek.

"Is he going to slot in to midfield as the defensive midfielder, allowing Soucek to get forward like he did in his first season? If so it could be a very shrewd signing."

He's already my second favourite Mehican that may or may not have joined West Ham before he's kicked a ball. Goes to show how shit Chichario and Barrera were.

"He actually reminds me of a bigger stronger, hopefully faster Noble, with faster feet but without the occasional killer pass or dead ball. Does the dribble in circles ala Parker and Noble but strong enough to hold on. Has a decent shot from distance. And can score with his head. But lots of aggression, which could be a walking yellow/red card if the Premier League is too fast for hi"

A friend of mine who‚Äôs Dutch and supports Ajax says ?Ålvarez is better than Rice defensively but not as good at bringing the ball forward.

Literally just was in a lift with an ajax fan. Apparently he's very good. And he doesn't want him to leave.

"Ajax fans don’t seem to overly rate Alvarez. On the plus side, he seems to be filthy and gets stuck in, we like a Areola, Dicks style player"

Known as El Machin Certainly tough and should help us defensively. Need more pace in there now. Probably more than McTominay.
