So that means if I commit crime X then if I demonstrating hostility or motivation to commit that crime due to someone being gay then I may have a longer sentence eg if I get a one year sentence then the aggravating factor can make it a two year sentence. So if I assault someone I might get 12 months. If I shout ""you gay/trans ####"" whilst carrying out the assault I might get 24 months for the aggravating factor. But there is no ""new crime"" at all. It has to be an existing crime and this just extends the concept of an 'aggravating' factor to LGB people. I agree re the Police though. They have frequently overstepped the mark on this. I just think if we're going to criticise the government or political parties we should be honest/specific about what they're doing."
