"What I read from that piece was that he is a superb defender but can’t do long raking passes. I want my defenders to defend, let him pass it to Paqueta or whoever so they can get on with it."

"I'd rather keep Ings over Antonio if we're going to be a team that tries to play football with the football this coming season. We won't be able to get rid due to his wages anyway, but I've got a sneaky feeling he might prove useful this season. Can't say I'm happy about Cresswell, he should've gone 3 years ago, however I'm going to wait to see how the whole summer pans out and what the squad looks like before getting too hung up on it. Not gonna second guess the thinking behind everything that's going on, just want to enjoy West Ham again so prepared to cut some slack. FOR NOW."

"Comment from a Flemengo fan re. Fabricio Bruno: I'm a Flamengo fan and I think it's unlikely he'll perform well in Europe, to be honest. He is very good at defending, he is tall, strong, good in the air and very fast, he has the speed of a winger. but his weak point is with the ball at his feet, he is not a very technical defender in terms of passing, he always does the simple thing. If true seems like an odd player to target by a coach set on playing possession based building from the back football... in fact the majority of his YouTube highlights is hitting long balls out of defence."

Jimmy Greaves and John O'Hare? Even a dead Jimmy Greaves (RIP) would be a lot better than some of the strikers we've had lately.

If one of the primary reason that Cresswell is staying is to meet the HG criteria and it also looks as though Antonio is staying then presumably our primary targets are mostly foreign. We had been linked with free agents O'Hare and Greaves but perhaps they aren't seen as a priority if we are going out of our way to keep the HG players we have. Which HG players are we planning on getting rid of? Ings possibly but would we be able to find a buyer happy to pay his wages?

"Stubbo 3:29 Thu May 23 I wonder if Noble has influenced this. He is very loyal. Steidten, JL and Noble would've had a chat and I think with this and Antonio's extension, it could be Noble suggesting that we don't move too quick on the ""Out with the old and in with the new"". A new coach needs a few players around that know the place, have experience and will be a stable unit as the he settles in. They have probably also noted the players they want to get rid of also."

Lookman has been mentioned a few times on here in the past. Looked good on loan at Fulham and Leicester. Would'nt surprise me if we were finally take interest after a hatrick in a european final and his value going up 10m over night.

"I can see Cresswell being kept on as purely a voice in the dressing room, very occasional player. Seems a very good chance we'll sign a younger, quicker left sided fullback...see the links to the Turkish lad, as well as the links to Sessegnon. Id also like to see Lopetegui look at Cornet at left back...he converted Navas to a right back when at Sevilla to great effect, and Cornet played LB for Lyon where he played well in that role, and also in spells at Burnley. If he's truly been researching our team and players, could easily see Cornet being considered for the LB role, given he's relatively quick and mobile, is naturally left sided and more used to playing down the touchline. Whether his injuries have done for him who knows, but in a Lopetegui setup, we seems the best fit for LB in the current squad."

"Maybe Lopetegui will tweak his tactics slightly. I remember reading he wants to build the team around Kudus. I can’t help but think Cresswell is a bit of a lazy signing sold by a cheap, homegrown players that is good in the changing room."

I don't think we should have kept Cresswell either. All I was saying is that him signing an extension doesn't necessarily mean that we won't be looking for a quality LB.

"Agreed stubbo. Could definitely see him working as a left side CM. Don't want it to seem like I'm having a pop at Emerson. He had a very good season for us. In fact I don't think he'd be too out of place in a team like Man City, where the LB tends to cut inside. He's just not cut out for LB using Lopetegui's normal tactics."

"""If you're telling me that you actually think that Emerson can hug the touchline, run the flanks and whip crosses in, then you've clearly never seen him play."" And Cresswell can? This summer was a good time to part ways. I don't think in any universe you'll able to convince me its a good idea to keep him on.. Even the universe where we spend £35m on Maatsen."

"Takashi, yeah, it's definitely a problem that Cresswell's age has caught up with him and hopefully he won't have to play too much. He'd probably still work better for Lopetegui's tactics than Emerson would though. As for Emerson being on corner duty, he must be well down the list of takers. I don't think he took that many. In any case, the point is that he doesn't get into positions to put crosses in during open play. If you're telling me that you actually think that Emerson can hug the touchline, run the flanks and whip crosses in, then you've clearly never seen him play."

"I don't see us getting rid of Emerson as he's one of our better players, especially in terms of technical skills on the ball. I could see him being used further forward though on the left of midfield in a 4-3-3. Whilst he can cross, his instinct is to drive in-field when moving up the pitch and underlapping rather than overlapping....if we're looking for a fullback to charge up and down the line in a 4-3-3 to give us width, he doesn't seem like the guy. But playing left side of a 6 in a 4-3-3, with decent physicality, technical skills, passing and intelligence....could totally see him there (and maybe even being our direct replacement for Paqueta in that kind of setup). The interesting one for me is how Lopetegui fits both Bowen and Kudus into a 4-3-3 formation (assuming he goes with this which he usually has done). Neither are natural left sided forwards, neither are natural central strikers, and in that formation there is no space for a central playmaker.... Could we line up with a midfield of: Kudus -- Alvarez -- Emerson, with Bowen ahead of Kudus. Would it be combative enough? Either way the Kudus + Bowen question is a conundrum I'm interested to see what he does with. Maybe he'll just stick one of them wide left forward and be done with it, but this certainly seems less than optimal."

"If Emerson is unable to cross, why would he have been put on corner duty last season?"

Not very excited about the rumours of a Grady Diangana return. Watch the Southampton v West Brom game and he was pretty woeful.

"The logic is really, really simple. If the player cannot function in the required role using the tactics of the team, then there's no point in him being there, however good he might be under another tactic. Just as someone like Dawson might be a decent CB, but you wouldn't want him in a team who play a high line. Lopetegui focuses play on the flanks and likes to put a lot of crosses in. That requires having someone in position who can do that. As for transfer fees, there's a lot of people who would see spending big on full backs as a waste of money. People who haven't moved on since the 90s and don't realise that things have changed."

"the only logical explanation of another year of cresswell is they're planning on loaning out scarles for a season to give him a full year of senior games. I think he's ready now, but they probably think he'd be better getting minutes in possibly the championship rather than just the cup games and occasional sub appearance"
