"St. George, patron saint of…. agricultural workers, farmers, field workers; soldiers; archers; armourers; equestrians, cavalry, saddle makers; chivalry; peacekeeping missions; skin diseases, lepers and leprosy, syphilis; sheep, shepherds, scouting, England …. but interestingly not damsels in distress on account of dragons."

Not sure that'll be a vote winner with all those refugees. Every day is a bank holiday for them.

Today would have been a bank holiday if Corbyn had had his way.

They keep lawyers and hoteliers and politicians and boat makers and civil servants and interpreters and smugglers and newspapers or media all in business or at least partly enable their jobs. I would say a national day would in general be for and about the nation's people as an entire group and their common joy of the nation so in this case Jezza is talking bollocks and should be ashamed of himself.

It means welcoming refugees — and celebrating the ways they have made our country a better place. can someone ask him to list the ways?

Jeremy Corbyn @jeremycorbyn Happy St. George’s Day! Loving your country means looking after each other to ensure nobody lives in poverty. It means defending our public institutions like the NHS. It means welcoming refugees — and celebrating the ways they have made our country a better place.

"Why can’t people celebrate the day in their own way if they want to, without others chipping in with ‘but what about this, what about that’. The country has given plenty, why can’t we have a proper day to celebrate it? Quite often when there’s a day, or in some cases a month, to celebrate other countries/sections of the community, the media are all over what they’ve given to the world. Don’t hear too much in the way of all the countless things England has given, so much brilliance in inventions, literature, music, film, art, sport etc etc etc Why CAN’T we celebrate those things for one day? *raises 10th pint to Charles Dickens*"
