I get the logic but disagree it needs doing to fund other players needed. 1) I believe we have plenty of money anyway if they want to spend 2) we can sell others players first before key top player's like Kudus. Be stupid to dilute the quality. The disastrous world record fee at the time Rio splurge spring immediately to mind. Fuck. That.

If anything, I'd try patching up Fullcrock and send him packing already if there's a Club mug enough to pay good money for him a few months later.

I'd only sell Kudus if he was keen to leave.

I agree. Just think they'll decide that we need strengthening in other areas, and the money for Kudus will be the budget builder. Especially given we might need a backup for Paqueta before season end.

Personally I'd like to see us rotate Kudus, Bowen and Summerville to keep them all in form (and fresh) all the time.

Stubbs

We called it leading in to the game asking for a midfield trio of Soucek, Soler, Paqueta in a 4-3-3 and got our wish. That Formation is one I think suits us a lot with how fluid the midfield was constantly interchanging and controlling play. It was a great tactical set up.

The Barcodes didn't know who the fuck to pick up, it was like the scene out of The 3 Amigos where we'd suddenly reappear and surprise the opposition by taking up new positions either passing or stealing the ball back off them. 😄

*Performs the 3 Amigo salute*

As for Kudus, he is made to play in Summervilles position picking up the ball in the final 3rd driving the opposition mad. It'll be great competition watching them 2 battling it out all season for that position in the Team where Kudus will play mostly. I wouldn't dream of selling him unless he was desperate to leave. A serious player.

No not until game after Leicester.

Can't see him in the team with Bowen and Summerville unless it's in place of Antonio.

Nothing else in a 4-3-3 makes sense.   His passing not good enough for midfield, so the forwards line is the option.

Actually think we'll sell him first decent offer we get (60-70m+), and use the money for a proper striker, and a younger wide forward.

OK - got to half time.

Think we contained them with some good discipline.

Both Bowen's snap-shots in the last 10 minutes spoke of quick thinking.

OW-B would be my first half MoM due to his excellent reading of the game and timely interventions.

Another 45 minutes. I can't wait.

IMO Sourcek was the most important player last night, and he's clearly been needed in that role ever since he replaced Guido after 30 mins against Chelsea.

He's the only player in the squad able to play that hybrid midfield defence role with the intelligence to know where to be and when.

Couple with the fact he's our biggest threat at corners, and also he's the guy who has to get forward whenever Fabianski is booting it long to compete for the high ball.  Without him, what we did yesterday simply doesn't work.

So Alvarez, Rodriguez...spells on the bench beckon. The Kudus decision will be the interesting one... Summerville deserves to hold his place, but Kudus is the better player....but hasn't been grafting anything like as hard, so doesn't really deserve to come straight back in.

About 2/3 of the way through the first half - no commentary.

General consensus on here seems to be that we were under the cosh during that time, but I don't see it that way; Newcastle had a lot of possession, sure, but we marshalled them well and battled better than I've seen for a long time to get that 2nd ball.

Hour to go. Ho Hum.
The only times they troubled us 1st half in front of goal was when they were offside, which obviously means the move is null and void had they scored. The one big chance they did have which Todibo berked up laid on a plate with 1 poor clearance, Fabianski still saved well from and at St. James Park with an in form quality Newcastle side you ain't going to keep them quiet all game and would always have the occasional chance.

For all their possession, they didn’t really hurt us and it was actually us most of that 1st half that was hurting them, with good chance after good chance and no offsides. Actually within the whole game we received zero offsides which I thought was impressive and another clear indicator of decent coaching. How many times can we say that, especially with Antonio up front...

I didn't trawl back.

It was just galling you suggesting you have more faith in 1 win in 10 Moyes.

I'm sure it's been stated but we finally saw two strong halves from the team. I had feared the worst coming into this one and never so glad to eat humble pie. Paqueta was the biggest surprise for me as he's been so poor all season. He does seem to do better in that deep-lying playmaker role.Big question as to whether Alvarez slots back in and where Guido fits in at all.

Hats off to Lopetegui for coming up with a result with his back against the wall.

LOL

Moyes had 1 win in 10 for us against the Toon.

I'm far from his biggest fan, but Lopetegui has matched that already.
We were smashing them up there last season until that riduculous penalty decision against Philips entered the game.
Fixed it for you

Troy Deeney picks a PL team of the week having taken over the role vacated, on the BBC, by Garth Crooks. This week he included three of our team from last night in his eleven.

Kilman, Soucek and AWB.

Big step in the right direction. He just needs to stick to that team now for next week and build on it. Can't revert back to changing personnel/formation again after previous wins

A much better performance by everyone all round.

Rode a bit of a storm in the first half for a period but second half i was very impressed.

The international break seems to have helped alot.

Genuinely thought that Soler and Paqueta would not cope in the midfield but again was surprised. I'm not sure if that will be the awnser going forward as lacks so much pace but happy to be proved wrong!

Also Antonios tracking back and work rate was greatly improved.

Very happy and hopefully this is the start of a better season for us.

Not dreading Arsenal as much now.
