Just thought he deserves his own thread after Fridays performance.

All he needs is first team football to develop - a bit like Rice when he started out.

His anticipation, positioning and awareness impressed me... probably needs to bulk up a little bit but looks the part to me.

 

Great for Scarles and for the academy as a whole.

For me this creates allot of optimism for Potter.  No other manager comes in and after just 1-2 days training starts a young player over senior experienced players, we just don't see that at West Ham.

It tells me that he A) had the ear of the development coaching team and trusted their feedback and B) is prepared to give our youth players a chance.

Also for Potter that sets him off on a real positive note with the fans despite the result.

Interesting to see him doing set pieces along side Coufal. As well as being praised for playing the young man Potter should also be praised for taking him off when he did as he was understandably starting to look a bit ragged

Can you imagine how he felt being told he was in the starting 11 and the impact that will have on our other academy players. Great move by Potter.

Scarles did really well in a tough game. Why wasn’t Emerson on the bench though? 

He was superb and a lot of that is thanks to Paqueta to helped him out on the left side - like he used to do with Emerson. It made us a little bit unbalanced but also made for three great scoring opportunities for Paqueta, one of which he scored.

It was certainly encouraging. At 19 he needs a run of games now, stop start is no good and before you know it he's 21 or 22 and it's not looking good. If you're good enough, you're old enough. As a comparison, Kerkez at Bournemouth was the real deal at 20, a regular in the PL and a full international. Fingers crossed.

He had a really solid debut especially up against Bailey and playing in a back four where you are more exposed. 

I was more pleased that we may finally have a coach that is prepared to give some of the better youngsters a go, it's almost criminal that once again we have young players out on loan that don't get played, particularly George Earthy at Bristol City, like Callum Marshall last season it really holds back there development 

Pleased for the lad did better than expected.

Wasn’t it put out there that Emerson was going to Italy and we were looking for a player swap?

Emerson has previously been excellent but off it this season with injuries & being withdrawn in several matches
He can cover left back with Scarles (he turned 19 in December btw) so have much bigger priorities than Chilwell. 
Would be paying more attention to Dewsbury-Hall as a Chelsea loan 
And Douglas Luis from Juve if that loan is still possible

I agree, our left side of the defence was more secure than the right, where lapses resulted in the goals. He should be giving Emerson strong competition.
