Sir Alf" wrote: 16 Feb 2025, 09:44 Good summary Nutsin. Potter reverted to a back 4 and got central midfield wrong relying on the slowest double pivot central midfield in the Premiership. A back 3 seems a better fit but also when Paqueta dropped deeper we had 3 in the central mid and stopped Brentford having so much space to run into when they countered. As u say, Paqueta has to play deeper with the game ahead of him.

Not writing Potter off yet but he has to learn we cannot  play a 2 person central midfield of Alvarez and Soucek and that Mavro in a 4 man back 4 us going to be risky. Hopefully wont see either mistakes repeated?  Main other thing we need is Ferguson and Todibo to get and stay fit
Yeah, interesting summaries, Alf and Nutsin.

I also think it’s far too early to judge Potter. These are not his players and there’s just no way he’d have signed most of them. I’m not saying he’ll rip it up at West Ham (who knows), but his teams don’t generally look like us right now.

This old, slow and tired squad has a LOT of problems. But by far the biggest problem I can see is in central defence.

Nutsin summed it up nicely: “Mavrapanos still getting in the side as a starter makes you wonder just how good he must show at practice all week because on match day he is always one of the worse players on the field.”

Its not that Mavrapanos is any good - he’s fucking terrible. A mistake waiting to happen. It’s just that we don’t have any depth, and the other centre halves are also woeful - or injury prone.

We’ve spent (or agreed to spend) a small  fortune on some absolute dross. Kilman is the worst £40m footballer I’ve ever seen. He has the turning circle of an oil tanker and regularly gets destroyed for pace over ten yards - let alone 20+. It means we can’t really play, or get, high up the pitch quickly enough. So he forces us to play a way that Potter probably doesn’t want. Absolute waste of that huge outlay. Slow, off the pace mentally, and too easily exposed because of it. His saving grace is that he doesn’t really make “mistakes” like Mavrapanos - and he is a battler. It’s just that his physical attributes are poor for the modern Premier League, where opponents are often athletes more than footballers.

Mavrapanos was in excess of £20m. We've agreed to spend £34m on Todibo, who is a good player but injury prone - and clearly nursing his way through the season. And we spent £30m on Aguerd who started well, deteriorated under Moyes and then got loaned out by a hopeless manager who had no idea what he was doing.

Thats £125m worth of “talent” and we’re catastrophically poor at the back.

Fixing that will take some doing. Who, for example, will want to sign Kilman at his fee/wages - unless it’s a move like a return to Wolves for half the money?

Moyes and Lopetegui royally lumped us in it.
I also have to say that Sullivan - and the departed (and largely over-rated) Steidten should hang his head in shame over the Kilman deal. How a chairman and technical director could let a new manager sign somebody so obviously limited for £40m and then put him on astronomical wages and a seven-year contract, is beyond me.

Club chairman rightly and wrongly get blamed for a lot of things - some within their control, some not. But that Kilman deal was akin to falling asleep at the wheel.

Kudus    PL Assists - 12  - Overall Assists - 13

But he's a Box to Box Midfielder we hear you say...
Defensive Midfield - 15725 -10
Central Midfield  -53  -10  -2
Attacking Midfield  -18  -6  -1

And no most of Souceks early games under Moyes were as an attacking midfielder
🤣
Showing yourself up again! Come on then tell us where you got these stats about Soucek being a defensive midfielder cos we all know thats not how he was being played. If hes played so many games as a defensive midfielder the suggestion being that he doesnt venture forward, so he shouldnt provide many assists! Tell us how he's managed to get close enough to score all those goals! Fuckwit!

But lets face it no one here can figure out what your fucking point is!

Mctominay would have provided some much welcomed energy, stamina and physicality to that central midfield. He aint super quick but onviously quicker than anyone we have in the squad for that area. I think I might be? 🤭

But I still think we need 2 high quality, young, very quick and physical players in that area of the team. These players also have to be technical good too so every club is on the lookout for them. Just have to hope Macaulay has identified some developing, future gems.

Get these 2 in the engine room, one hopefully with some aerial ability too. We may still need a creative no 10 if Paqueta goes or is banned and likely a replacement for Kudus. Some will say Guilherme but even if that is the case, need squad backups.  Potts, Earthy might step up into the squad but neither is blessed with the strength of a Kudus and are different types of player anyway.

A striker / central target man with strength and pace ( as an alternative to Fullkrug who is unlikely to be available for all games and for 90 mins of them, based on his injury history).  Another left or right back would be needed too which for me has to be Walker Peters on a free.

Finally, another goalkeeper with footballing skills with his feet and able to pass long and short with near perfect accuracy.

Cost of that lot, even with young potential recruits, at least £150 million. Hence, imho, Kudus, Paqueta, Aguerd, Mavro, Soucek, Emerson all have to be in the shop window. If decent bids come in we have to take them. Soucek is the one that divides fans most but thats covered in other discussions.

Oh and we need to be getting a player or two in on 1st June or soon after

That’s as maybe but he didn’t want to come & is on ludicrous wages
One of many Man U problems , overpaid so going nowhere & exploited by any team with pace
Was embarrassed in the Euro final. Spent the whole match trying to fight Romero & his poor defending not dealing with the cross resulted in Tottenham’s only shot

I would have been happy with McTominay (but not Maguire) when Moyes was interested
Physical presence with a goal in him
Man U’s transfer dealings in and out have been abysmal
Hopefully topped off by a MOTM performance by Antony for Betis next week

I see one of those sidebar articles mentions an interest in 20yo Mateus Fernandes at Southampton, Villa & Leeds also keen
Best player in a shit team, no idea whether any truth in it

Made all the difference with Napoli, imagine if we had got him when Moyes was keen, wasn't there rumour he was open to the idea?

Another who slipped through our fingers, mind you he could only make the bench with the Mancs, bet they regret letting him go now, make you wonder who else could come good away from that toxic mess, see Antony is doing well with Betis, another who was shit with ManU.

Knowing our luck though we will go all in for someone like Mount, who along with being injury prone seems to be the modern-day Jack Wilshire🤣 a few good games in his early career that he feeds of for the rest of it!
There is also Wan Bissaka, our best signing last summer by a long way. ManU as so lost.

Paqueta has scored 5 goals (4 in the League) and 0 Assists after 35 matches.

Ironically 1 of those goals came way of Soucek winning a Penalty for us and for him to benefit from and 2 Penalty goals scored altogether in those 5. So Soucek has more Assists than Paqueta and even won him a Penalty.
Cheers, Masive son 👍
So our 'least skillful' player has better stats than our 'most skillful, and valuable' player.

Soucek isn't the greatest, but think I know who I'd rather flog close season.
Especially as we appear to need the readies.

He's assisted 9 times in the Premier League the same amount as superstar Attacking Midfielder Paqueta and as we all know, it's not even close to his primary role within the Team. You almost sound like Soucek should be laying on plenty of Assists which was never the argument. He shouldn't be anywhere near the likes of Paqueta or Kudus for producing Assists, but he is. Because "just pop up in the box and score himself" is all he does......
Box to box midfielders job isnt to provide or create chances for others you say ok! No he isnt anywhere near Paquetas stats based on games played he has half the number of assists. Compare Soucek to Alvarez who has 2 in 58 games extrapolate that up to the same number of games gives you 6.6 assists 1.4 less than Soucek for a totally defensive midfielder.

What this tells us is you dont understand stats or players roles. But again we already knew that!

Well who knew thanks for the indepth analysis! Youve saved us doing that even though everyone already knew that!

Btw what is a box to box midfielders job exactly? You think his only job is to run backwards and forwards, I say run I mean amble in his case.  Not provide any passes or opportunities for other player to score, just pop up in the box and score himself? Brilliant, well he does that, to his credit he scores goals but his passing is terrible and his assists numbers are not great and he has little or no pace. He's good in the air though!

So you are comparing one player who has played 190+ games - mostly as a box to box midfielder barring one season when he played DMF covering Rice and has 8 assists compared to a 90+ games playmaker with 9 assists what do you deduce from this comparison exactly?

You could say neither of them are anywhere near as good as Nobes who had 35 assists 4 x as many!

I like Soucek, but we cannot hang on to him as a security blanket for goals. We should be brave and go for addition by subtraction, put our faith in new blood in the middle of the park to provide us many more goalscoring opportunities on the whole.

At least 2 young, athletic, fast, physical central midfielders a central striker / target man with pace and a goalkeeper the priorities imho. A left back and another CB would be handy too
