"The new EU entrants get to enjoy the journey. It ends with rape, murder, miscegenation, de-industrialisation, loss of freedom, lack of free speech, loss of sovereignty and national identity, war, poverty and starvation. Sound familiar?"

Re: The war in Ukraine
"I honestly don't think the EU could afford to take Ukraine. It would mean some of the poorest members have to become net contributors, beyond the richest paying more. It would also have to ignore many of it's own requirements and could cause conflicts of interest with other member states. You only have to look at the current grain issue."

Re: The war in Ukraine
"rios. That's the thing, I think there will be to many conditions on both sides that will get in the way of any move towards EU membership for Ukraine. It'll all get bogged down in the usual red tape nonsense the EU is so fond of and we'll be cleft with a stalemate."

Re: The war in Ukraine
"o1bb I think Ukraine could well end up joining the EU, the problem is the deal the Eu wanted, no trade deal with Russia (at the time over 70% of Ukraine's trade was with Russia). Russia had no problem with ukraine becoming part of the EU, as long as it did not impede on trade with Russia. Although, Russia will probably be happy to hand over what's left of Ukraine to the EU"

Re: The war in Ukraine
Gopnik You expect Ukraine to join Nato when this is over? The whole reason for this war is that Russia does not accept NATO bases and missiles in Ukraine. How do you expect this war to end?

Re: The war in Ukraine
And I’m pretty sure I’d rather have Ukraine in NATO than against it once this is all over.

"Now that so many have died unnecessarily, you can start to ask who they really died for and how do we stop this from ever happening again. You can read for yourself (try to do this honestly and not look for justifications), this document is just one in a series from the Rand Corp (who either dictate or reflect a lot of US foreign policy, certainly towards Russia). I recommend you download the pdf and ignore the front page. The Rand Corp, Extending Russia. https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR3063.html"

"You’re clearly a former unionist, Fatso. Probably some shop steward bent on fucking up a factory so that everyone ends up getting laid off. Fact is, in NATO, Ukraine with its operational experience could be a valued member especially with respect to drone design and tactics"

Re: The war in Ukraine
When a country joins NATO it has to upgrade its military weaponry See if you can guess who is the only show in town who can sell them the stuff they’re obliged to pay for?

Re: The war in Ukraine
"ZzzzzzzZzz Why don’t you ever look for divvy opinion pieces about how the US has destroyed Israel with its support, SBT2?"
Re: The war in Ukraine
"It could be argued that NATO used Ukraine to advance its expansion with Finland and Sweden. Sucks for Ukraine but could be considered a win for NATO adding 2 new members, protecting Europe from any Russian military advancement from the North. So not a total loss really, some might even say well played. As for Ukraine well, that’s for Poland, Romania and other border countries to live with. Moving forward they’re gonna have to deal with a trigger happy, threatened, paranoid Putin for the foreseeable future. Oh well."

Re: The war in Ukraine
"Ukraine will need a lot of support, millions have died (on both sides) and there are cities that will possibly never get rebuilt. Thats schools, homes and hospitals all gone. Millions of Ukraine's brightest and best have either been killed, wounded or have left the country, many never to return. On the original thread, near the start, I posted up a link to Proj Mearsheimer, back from 2014 who explained what was happening and where this would end and how. He was nearly 100% right. The US has destroyed yet another country, with European help. I hope you are proud."
