U21 Loan Watch

I don’t know about you, but I love it when a player makes it through the ranks to become a first team regular. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen often these days. This is a shame because giving young players a chance is an area where we could have an edge over the traditional top 6.

The current crop give me some cause for optimism, having won the FA Youth Cup and U18 League South a couple of seasons back. Maybe two or three can make it. No fewer than eight U21 players have gone out on a season loan to lower league clubs. Meanwhile, Casey, Scarles and Orford remain at the club. Hopefully, they will get a few minutes on the pitch, but I’m not holding my breath. Mubama had a few chances last season but mostly disappointed with his lack of technique. Inexplicably, he has now joined Man City to give Haaland competition.

So, to the eight who are currently out on loan. How are they getting on?

1. Callum Marshall - Huddersfield (League One). After a disappointing loan spell at West Brom last season, Marshall has dropped down to League One. So far, he has done quite well and already found the net. Yesterday, he played for 67 minutes before being replaced.

2. George Earthy - Bristol City (Championship). A lot of great things expected of Earthy. He didn’t make the squad yesterday. Is he injured?

3. Michael Forbes - Bristol Rovers (League One). Did not make the squad.

4. Freddie Potts - Portsmouth (Championship). Player of the season at Wycombe last year, but unused sub yesterday.

5. Krisztian Hegyi - Motherwell (Scottish Premier). Unused sub.

6. Patrick Kelly - Doncaster (League Two). Came on in the 78th minute.

7. Levi Laing - Cheltenham (League Two). Unused sub.

8. Gideon Kodua - Wycombe (League One). Came on in the 88th minute.

I make that 81 minutes of football between 8 players yesterday. Early days but a bit worrying. I’ll keep this updated throughout the season (if I can be bothered).

Were 3-0 up by then with Grimsby down to 10 men with a sending off on 45 mins

Earthy got a total of 14 minutes game time, including time added on. Did he do anything worthy of note, Django?

Incidentally, the Cardiff manager is Omer Riza. Does anyone remember him?

The manager is a complete knob, I thought that after their cup win against us so seeing them lose and not playing Earthy just confirms my opinion of him.

I am at the Bristol city game. Losing one nil at home to Cardiff. Three subs just on, no sign of Earthy….My city mates ain’t happy.

Potts played 90 minutes again, as struggling Pompey drew 1-1 at home to Oxford. He’s getting good reviews as a classy player who gets his tackles in. The only negatives that he might still be a bit lightweight, and perhaps he faded in the second half.

Marshall played just over an hour again for Huddersfield, in a 3-0 win against Yorkshire rivals Barnsley. He didn’t score, but I’ve read several accounts that he put in a very good, hard working performance.

Will Earthy get some game time today?

Potts played 90 minutes. Stoke scored 5 goals in 10 minutes either side of half time. Tommy Cannon (I kid you not) scored four.

Earthy was named on the bench but I couldn’t see him when the camera showed the substitutes near the end of the game.

Tomorrow we’ll see how Potts gets on in a cold Wednesday night at Stoke, while we hope that Earthy makes his comeback at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Marshall played his usual 60 minutes in a 1-0 defeat at Birmingham.

Forbes came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute with Bristol Rovers cruising 3-0 at home to Charlton. The game ended 3-2. I don’t know if these two events are directly related.

Laing came on in the 84th minute for Cheltenham as they saw out a 2-1 win at home to Accrington Stanley.

Kelly played for 82 minutes in a 1-0 win v Barrow.

Potts was given decent reviews by Pompey web sites saying he was all over the pitch, working hard and showing good level of skill.  So currently he is probably closest to making a step up to the first team squad albeit wouldnt be until next season and needs him to keep his place in the Pompey starting 11 and having a positive influence on games

Game finished 1-1. Bristol City made 5 changes during the second half but Earthy wasn’t one of them. Hopefully he’ll feature in their next game

It's frustrating that Earthy/Potts/Marshall/Scarles can't crack the level required ...not so many years  back they would piss it .
Such a  high bar now...
The likes of Noble/Tomkins /Reid earned their stripes in the championship.
These lads now  have to be exceptional to get a look in.
Noble had/has t​​​​​​he full metal jacket in his pants
