"Free agency started last night and was pretty crazy some huge money being spent. Osweiler getting £18m a year for the Texans, leaving the Broncos without a QB, Giants have spent a fortune on good but not great players, Oliver Vernon has more guaranteed money than JJ Watt. lots more deals but cant be bothered to list them all."

Rex Ryan often called defensive plays when he was Jets HC. Even when he had his underling Pettine. Just saying.

"And I'm going to keep saying it until the egotistical fella swallows his pride and starts calling defensive plays - but Robert Saleh has been a poor appointment so far. Because he was given the job on the back of his defensive work in SF. Yet in the past two and a half weeks, we've conceded 50+ points against the Patsies and 45(!) against the Colts. In between, we shipped 31 points even when winning against the Bengals. The defense is a clusterfuck. EVERYBODY can see what the problem is. Except Saleh, who has no HC experience and yet has decided he wants to be hands-off (in terms of calling plays) on match-days. So the defence is currently in the hands of somebody who got Dan Quinn sacked. I can see Saleh going down the same road as Quinn (who was also lauded as a defensive mastermind before he became Atlanta's HC). The situation is rescuable, but it probably needs Saleh to change approach."

"One of the few on our ""active"" roster with reliable hands - alongside Moore and Davis, I should say. The TEs are not playing well. Mims has often been inactive for some inexplicable and made-up reason."

"TM - agreed: I like Crowder. He has reliable hands - one of the few on our roster who does - and makes good catches in crowded areas. But it looks like the coaches went for Elijah Moore as the slot guy of the future, so there was talk of Crowder leaving. I'm pleased he didn't. It's a bit ridiculous - we actually have four decent receivers on the roster: Mims, Davis, Crowder and Moore. Yet until last week, most of them hadn't performed this season, while Mims is mysteriously out of favour (you have to think there is something else behind it, because it's just illogical to have left him out). Believe it or not, there are a few sides much better than the Jets that would bite your arm off for two or three of those WRs. Yet the Jets have wasted them so far. That's the NYJ effect under these owners."

"Jets traded for a half-decent OL from Kansas before the deadline. Guy hadn't played in 2020 - he opted out due to Covid - but adds a bit of depth for us. Decent move. Also kept Mims, May and Crowder, despite talk of trades for them. The Mims situation (he's barely starting) completely baffles me. He's a good receiver who lost a bit of weight (food poisoning) and plateaued a bit, but remains a big and physical presence. Clearly, LaFleur feels he doesn't fit into the offensive scheme - but in my view that's on him. If you can't make us of a WR like that then you are the problem, not the player. Anyway, hopefully the coaches will realise this and work him in."

"Scorch - it's the Jets: it is highly likely to be the former, but we live in eternal hope that it's the latter! He gave us a good day on Sunday, amid years of mediocrity, so he's already won the fans over. I see Geno Smith (remember him?) had a good day on Sunday, too. His first win as a starting QB since 2014. Every dog has its day."

"southbankbornnbred 11:01 No-one plans for a backup QB, so it'll be really interesting to see how he does when opposing teams start to look at his tendencies, actions and attributes and work it all into a gameplan. He could get hugely found out or turn out to be a surprise starting calibre player."

"Hunter is a big loss for the season for your lot, Cough. Only makes life in that division harder, because OC's won't need to double-team with the TE now - probably means that they'll be testing the secondary a bit more. Do you have a decent back-up?"

"One thing that I did notice in the Jets' game was that the Bengals, not having seen Mike White before, kept defending deep like they were protecting the ball over the top. White threw the shortage average depth for completions this season. On average, his receivers were standing five yards from him! The yards after catch were off the charts, and that's how the game was won - because the OC plotted to help his backup QB. I'm with Chris Simms on this: if the Jets spent more time planning to help Wilson in the same way, instead of just expecting a #2 draft pick to be able to throw lasers into double-coverage, then they would have won more games. It looks like the OC spent more time planning to help the back-up with a better play-book than he does with the more talented Wilson - who he just expects to be great off the bat (which is rarely the case)."

"Some hilarious local reactions to the Jets' comeback win against the Bengals - including many people in Gotham having a meltdown over the QB situation. Lots of hysterical over-reactions to the idea that golden boy Zach might not be an automatic choice when he returns. We'll see, of course: it was one game and we got a bit lucky when the stray cats made some dubious play calls while leading. Mike White's first start couldn't have gone better, and he's guaranteed to start the next three games, too. If he wins more than he loses, I don't see the problem here - you pick the guy who's winning. Wilson could probably benefit from sitting and learning from the sidelines a little anyway, in the way that even high-draft QBs of the past did. He has no choice at the moment, due to his knee knack, so we'll see how he responds when he's back. Frankly, I couldn't care less if we're paying our starting QB $50m or $5. The NFL is all about winning. especially when you've barely troubled the scorers for ten years."
