Kalvin Philips Done

Post El Coucho »

West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.

"COYI was saying the same sort of thing about Paqueta as well. Let's face it, it's the way of the world, especially if you're a WHU fan, that if you're a miserable prick who's negative about everything then you'll end up being right more often than not. Doesn't make you any less of a tiresome, miserable prick though."

COYI - got to admit that you were ultimately right about Benrahma and you might ultimately be right about Phillips. But it's way too early to write him off yet. If he can get back to something like his Leeds form we will have a player.

"Didn't see the game on Saturday but this signing is once more evidence of Moyes buying a player without a plan in mind. Same with Kudus to be fair. Don't get me wrong Kudus has been a fabulous player for us and I hope that continues but bringing him in hasn't helped the long term form of Bowen. Bowen is clearly better on the right, and so is Kudus and now Moyes has brought in Phillips to play in an area where as many have already said is well covered. I still think he would be better in a three with Soucek dropping to the bench but we know Moyes isn't going to do that. Just a total lack of vision from the management on where he fits in yet we desperately needed a striker."

Not saying Philips is a bad player but I think he has got it wrong coming here. I never understood Southgate constantly picking him. Subbing Rice in the final at Philipps expense etc. Same scenario here at West Ham. He's not better than Alvarez or JWP. Where does he play? Only way I can see it working is in a 433 with Soucek being dropped but he has the wrong manager for that to happen.

"Definitely should not be walking into our team, these pundits do come out with some crap. It is painful getting him match fit, but can see he has some quality about him and I think it'll be worth getting him there."

From what I gather Roy Keane had the cheek ahead of the Man u game to say Phillips should be 'furious' at being dropped. Didn't bother watching the Bournemouth game then Roy. The fucking cսnt thinking Phillips should just waltz into the team. Sums him right up.

"As mentioned. Thats Moyes and all these old washed up pundits who base their views of a player on reputation and not form or what he can do now. Why does most every club have a data analytics team and West Ham were one of the last to see its importance? A ckub in his own image. A 76 year old little man with a brass wife he bought and still living in a world that stopped existing in the 90s. Thats why he chooses managers like Moyes. A manager who was decent in the 90s / 2000s Steidten should not have sanctioned this loan but seems he isnt really a proper DOF at West Ham, just another Silkman, Salthouse or Moyes that Sullivan takes recommendations from."

I'm sure he'll get up to speed at some point (at our expense) and then someone else will buy him while we spent millions tarting up a player to put in the shop window for another club and lost valuable points doing so. It's all a bit silly really. My only hope is that Moyes wants to convert him or has seen something in him other than CDM.

I think Moyes still sees the player at Leeds that he wanted to buy. He may well get back to form but currently he isn't that player and we need players to contribute positively right away. To me it seems like we have borrowed a player for a lot of money on his reputation rather than what impact he would actually have now. I'd love to be proved wrong but this position wasn't even a priority. Creative left winger or a forward is - maybe even another centre back given Zouma can barely run.

"Trunds - yeah, gotta' be honest: the left-winger thing puzzles me. Moyes clearly hasn't fancied Cornet (have to say I agree based on what I've seen so far). So not replacing Benny/Fornals after the (almost) botched deals seemed weird. Unless, suddenly, Moyes does think Cornet can do the job well - or he'll play others out of position there (Paqueta?) for the rest of the season. Not a lot of logic going into the composition of the squad. Not unusual for us, though."

"And we simply don't have time to get a half season loan signing 'up to speed' or bedded in. They should be players who are totally ready to hit the ground running and make an immediate positive impact. Phillips isn't even a fucking guaranteed starter- certainly not on what he's shown so far. At the moment it looks like a really stupid waste of time and money to have an arse on the bench. And yes I will come back on here and fully retract that if he comes spectacularly good or a positive difference maker for us. As I said, this just smacks of doing the player and Man City a favour. I desperately hope this isn't a prelude to some sort of player plus cash in the summer because we'd be MENTAL, MENTAL to do it. Also he'll be 29 this year. You can't even say it's a wise long term investment. That would be 3 from 4 CM players on the books over the age of 29 midway through next season."

Trunds - you are being impressively flippant and you know it! ;-) He is currently NOT a Man City player. Unless it was them I watched lose 3-0 to Man Utd at the weekend..?!

"Whilst I won't write him off after a couple of mistakes and games, it is a bit mystifying that our only signing when we are short of players is one who hasn't played football regularly for months, has played in systems nothing like ours and is on loan for a couple of months which is probably what it will take for him to get up to speed. Someone is going to have to put a lot of effort into getting him ready to play. He's weak, day dreaming and way off the pace."

"I hope he comes good - just like I hope even the likes of Cornet come good for us. They're West Ham players, after all. But I do get why many fans think it was an odd deal, as we were well set for CMs (if you included Flynn) after the summer spending spree. We definitely had/have other priorities. Personally, I liked Phillips at Leeds. But that was some time ago (injuries, lack of playing time, lack of confidence etc) and he played under a manager who wanted to get onto the front foot as quickly as possible - which is not the case here with Moyes and his low block of 4,800 DCMs in the same side."

Faux Agree. Never rated him much myself and he doesn't get around the pitch quick enough. I too was baffled by pundits declaring he was ahead of Rice in the England pecking order. It was similar to the Soucek-Rice debate Johnson currently a better midfielder.
