May as well get going with this since with Sullivan at the helm, season ticket renewals slow, and the football vacuum to commence, this will soon be all the "news" there is.

Can Potter and MacCauley pull multiple rabbits out of the hat, or will Sullivan 'try really hard' with all of them before grabbing a few aging bargains from Big Willie Salthouse?

I get it about his age, but as said previously, on a free English, loads of energy and definitely quicker than any of our central midfielders, I think it's a decent squad signing given our current predicament.

Going by Potter's early games, he played Alvarez as the furthest forward of the central 3, the only thinking behind that is he wanted him to press high up the pitch, and he is the quickest of the lot (which is shocking but true) maybe Soler could match him, but Potter clearly didn't fancy him.

It didn't work, so he mostly went with Soucek as the furthest forward, but he just lacks any sort of pace to press, and that's a big reason why we had such a monumentally shit season. He won't be the only central midfielder we bring in, and a couple will go out, but I don't mind him as a high energy squad player, we've all been saying all season we badly need more of that.

They do, but it’s only a few seemingly to augment their on the whole very young squad and add a touch of experience and they have all had pretty distinguished/international careers. Somewhat moreso than Brownhill. If as you say we end up adding 6-7 players the right side of 25 then great and his experience as it is will be at least a bit handy but if he’s any sort of template to the rest of our business then owch.

Yup. Simply the player’s age is a disappointment here. We want players who are going to increase their value, not lose it.
Yes maybe he signs a couple of years contract and we end up ‘flipping’ him for a few mill in a season or two so it might end up being fairly cost neutral but we need to be identifying and investing in those Brighton type players. I don’t think the identifying will necessarily be the issue and I believe P&M will do but convincing the dwarf to invest in them over the Briwnhills and Ings’ of this world will be.

If Brownhill was 22 & had the season he just has had then you’d hope he’d follow in the footsteps of some of our other Championship successes like Bowen & Cresswell
But at near 30 …

If we are looking at Championship players the two Burnley defenders Esteve (23yo French centre half) & Egan-Riley (22yo Eng u21 centre half / right back / def midfielder) are ones to look at
You want players at that sort of age with say 100 games so you can judge them in a competitive league

when I criticize this linked player, it's not really fair because I struggle to see anyone flourishing in this negative cսnt's system. clearly the poisonous midget fucker has told potter the youngsters won't be blocking any arrivals, so any chance of one of our own getting substantial minutes is out of the window for more late 20s/£100k+ a week squad fillers. got to keep those commissions coming in. half a season of evidence has shown that we don't have a coach in charge, as he failed to develop anyone in that time. apart from bowen/awb, everyone continued to stagnate and the treatment of scarles shows he has no patience or tolerance of a bad performance, even if it was against the best RWF in premier league history

Just comparing his career to Ward-Prowse record alone in the Premier League he's blown out the water.

404 apps 57 goals 47 assists
- 1 goal produced every 3 games

He's one of those players who is not really excellent at anything.

Compared to attacking midfielders his goal output is weak, but his 'graft' stats are excellent.

Compared to a non-attacking midfielder, his goal output is actually very good, but his graft and passing stats are very average.

And those stats are based on his Championship performances (and the other 13 'second-tier' leagues).

So he's a jack of all trades, master of none. Good player to have on the bench of bring in for an injury cover. If we go into the season with him as a key player in the side, we're in trouble.

We've already got that in the side with Ward-Prowse and Soucek and both a level above Brownhills quality at a similar age. Yes he'll cost us nothing (music to Sullivans ears) but it's hardly a signing that changes anything. I'd sooner see the likes of Earthy and Potts given a proper go now in the Squad, as well as Irving so I don't see a real need for Brownhill.

If we were to add in that area of the pitch I'd much rather see us go for a lot better quality as a statement of what we want to do. Genuinely fast, highly energetic who could make more goals than Brownhills previously poor Premier League output and 1 much younger than 30 this year. I thought 1 of the main issues was to also considerably lower the age of the Squad with new additions?

For the record I loved Dawson and was 1 of the few that said he'd pleasantly surprise and produce some serious results and performances for us. I don't see Brownhill being in that bracket though, who has only excelled more in the Championship.

Agree with everything in Vexed's post except the bit about him not starting. He's a very decent midfielder and 18 goals from midfield in the Championship is excellent. He may not be a glamour signing like Paqueta or Kudus but I would be very surprised if he doesn't turn out to be more productive and more of a team player than either of them. Just the kind of solid, dependable but also dynamic signing that we need.

I think there's a difference, Wolves fans said Kilman was a range from bang average to absolutely pony, and definitely a shit captain across the board.

Burnley fans range from decent to very good player, especially at certain things, as well as being an excellent captain.

There's also the £40mil discrepancy.

Yup, as long as he does turn out to be an insurance/squad signing then absolutely it’s a decent deal and needs to be weighed up in the context of whoever else arrives as well. If he ends up as our first choice in midfield come the end of the transfer window, then we’re in trouble.

It’s the disappointment that despite already having had a squad full of older players on the decline with zero resale value at all, we are still looking at players on the downside of their career rather than the upside.

At least this deal won’t be expensive and there’s no transfer fee so we won’t be paying for it financially for ages like Kilman. One deal in isolation does not make a transfer window so as long as we do add a lot of youth and some big future potential rather than journeymen it won’t be so bad.
