Euro 2024 - Inc Southgate resignation

"We seem to have an England v Bosnia thread but not an actual Euro 2024 thread so here it is So, do we realistically think England can win it? On paper we obviously have a very talented squad but I just don't see us going all the way. For me it's ""same old"" when it comes to England. Breeze the group, favourable draw in last 16 and win then up against far superior opposition in the QFs and out. At best I can see us at the SF stage before being beaten again. Winners for me: France, Portugal, Spain Dark horses: Germany - even though it's a home tournament they've been in a consolidation period, could go close Biggest flops: Scotland - no goals scored Top goalscorer: Mbappe I'm just hoping it's a decent tournament with plenty of decent games that's not ruined by VAR (are they using it?) consolidation period but could go close"

"Whatever happens on Sunday, all I know is what has stopped us beating a top in form nation is the non ability of the current manager to react to being outplayed and preventing our players from sitting deep….especially significant if we go a goal up…..the opposition managers at these top nations has the ability to quickly react and nullify our threat….with the players we have why can’t we do the same to them? The only thing I am aware of is every nation sees the PL as the biggest challenge to play against yet rarely do we apply any of it to our international game."

We all know that in the days following our win on Sunday there will people devaluing our feat by explaining how Spain are not that good and we’re generally overrated.

"Fully agree manny, you can only play the sides you are drawn against. My point was aimed more at the reaction of the media should we lose on Sunday. We've seen it all before when teams have been hailed as brave heroes for failing at the final hurdle. This time we are in the final as a result of who we have played against more than how we've played. I genuinely hope we win the thing and as you said earlier, should we win it then no one would care how we got there and how we played."

Billy - But you can only beat what's in front of you and it's nobody's fault who we have played after we won our group. Had we played tougher sides whose to say we wouldn't have stepped up and won anyway? It wasn't that long ago that we were getting knocked out the last 16 in the Euro's by Iceland (2016) getting knocked out in the group stages (2012) and not qualifying at all (2008) how's that for some perspective :-)

"Should Southgate move on when this tournament ends, who are the main contenders to replace him? Obvious (English) choice is Howe but not sure he'd want to walk away from Newcastle yet. As for this tournament, looking at our path that got us to where we are now, a semi final was the minimum requirement based on who we have played. Think in a way, it mirrors our conference league run, delighted to get where we did but it wasn't a massive achievement getting there. Had Englad been in the other half of the draw for the knockout rounds and got to the semi it would have been something to shout about but a bit of perspective don't hurt."

"Yep Bowen was very good when he came on first time and because of it got the nod second time, but unfortunately for him was easily our worst second half and were under the cosh and playing shit. Palmer then came in and has been very good and now deservedly next in line. As for Foden being a bit better against the Dutch, when we were in control the first half he was easily the best player on the pitch as he often is for city"

"Lab - Yes, Dutch, I'll be glad when this is over :-) Cholo - Bowen did well when he come on the first time and not so well the second and hasn't seen since. I don't think he has much to complain about and to be fair just looks delighted just to be there, and he could be taking home a winners medal on Sunday to cherish for the rest of his days."

"Manuel Spot on. Also, from a west ham point of view, it's s bit of a shame that Palmer stole Jarrod's thunder somewhat, seeing as Bowen was the first to replace Saka he might have been more at the forefront of Southgate's mind to be the main backup on that right wing. But fair play to Palmer, he's been brilliant. What a shame he plays for those west London wankers."

"I think some are underestimating the role/impact of substitutes in these type of games. Yes they probably should have been on earlier in most games, but todays game is a lot more about just the first eleven. We'll never know, but for my money if someone like Palmer had started games he wouldn't have had the same impact as he has had as he would have had to a lot defending, like Saka has had to do, when he's come on the game has been more stretched and more open, if you look at the Spanish defense when Palmer slotted the ball through to Watkins they were almost standing still, that phase of play probably would not have happened earlier in the game. Our subs could have a massive impact on Sunday and that could give us a big advantage late on, as Spain don't have the same quality on their bench."

"Onsideman Palmer has stood out in the tournament. Every time he has come on we threaten more. He plays the ball forward, not sideways or backwards like the rest, he is way more aggressive and keeps the defenders honest. There is a lot to like about his movement and his game. Kid can play and will be a permanent fixture in the England team, give it a couple of years and you will catch on, you’ll see. England play better when he is on the pitch. Not surprising that you are too stupid to notice though."

"Yea I'm really looking forward to watching us play like Brazil 82 when the new herbert comes in. It's nice to see free flowing football but these games are so tactical now it's really not that simple. If we win this nobody will care or remember about the earlier games. Sir Gareth is leaving, good luck to the new bloke in bettering his record, but at least we might see a few back heels and stepovers."

"We should forget about the penalty and was it/wasn't it. The Dutch quite rightly will feel hard done by but given our history of bad luck and dodgy calls in crucial games at big tournaments its nice to get one going our way. Hopefully signals a change in fortune not just at this tournament but the next WC. Still hope to see Gareth gone win or lose though, thanks in some ways but he has served up some boring and negative shit."
