"People who can sleep within 8 seconds of head hitting pillow, how the fuck do you do this?"

"My brain has decided it's no longer a thing I'm allowed to do, ""oh you're tired, well you're not any more? ""Oh you were relaxed? Well now I'm going to elevate your heart rate for a laugh"" ""oh you have no worries? Well here's a hundred things to think about.' I know the basics, no screen time before bed, room and work separate, exercise and no caffeine too late. Nothing working. Doctors are useless too, apparently sleeping pills are being stockpiled for a rainy day or something. Any other tips??"

I am one of the annoying people who sleep without problems. This book has a lot of detail on sleep. Worth a read if you are struggling with sleep. Has a lot more than the basics. https://amzn.eu/d/5tkOiKl (Mathew Walker - Why We Sleep) Personal tips other than the basics from me: Don't medicate it. Give up the booze. (at least for a while) Don't drink Caffeine or eat chocolate from as early as 2pm. Confess your sins.

"Goose, just looked that up, says ""reduces tiredness and fatigue"" but I guess it promotes healthier sleep cycle if taken in the day?"

I think once you get in your head that you struggle to go to sleep it becomes an issue with the mind. Mind working overdrive and not fully in a relaxed state keeps you awake. Luckily I fall off straight away BUT any slight noise in the night wakes me up straight away. Well it feels like that anyway.

"The mind that triggers the amygdala brain centre responsible for fight and fright is the enemy of relaxation, rest and sleep. Whatever technique that works for you is good as long as your mind is letting you rest. I find just stopping, breathing naturally, feeling the weight of the body and taking an observation standpoint outside the mind....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz*"

"This is usually me. I’ve mastered the art of emptying my mind and falling into a deep coma. Maybe there wasn’t much in my mind to begin with! Of course, this doesn’t stop me from waking up about an hour later, and constantly during the night, sometimes. If this happens, I just accept my fate and try not to worry about it, knowing that i’ll get a decent sleep the next night or the night after."

"I get much better kip when I’m on the wagon. It averages out about the same, but it feels better. Falling asleep sober is potentially more tricky, I just have to be more patient, and count Darby Sold’s pretend mates."

"I’ve been having issues sleeping recently,a combination of my brain doing a hundred miles an hour and then getting pissed off that it’s keeping me awake So a friend suggested this meditation app, I used it for the first time last night, was out like a light in about 15 minutes It’s called smiling mind if anyone’s interested"

"Coffee 12:27 Sun Jan 7 Fear not, there are YouTube channels that cater for this, 12 hours videos (with black screen) of ambient plane noises, desk fans, rain on window, rain on tent, background TV, you name it, you'll probably be able to find it. Weirdest one I've seen is a Hoover, who the fuck is relaxing to a hoover??"

I used to go out with a girl who had a sleep disorder and once a drink was taken she was likely to drop off into.a deep sleep and ibe hard to awaken. This happened in pubs restaurants on trains and even in meetings. I once went for a pee in a packed Italian and returned to find her slumped over the table in a deep slumber with the lady proprietor giving me suspicious looks and asking if she had taken anything. She would regularly miss her stop on the tube and end up travelling back and forth until someone managed to wake her usually as the train was going out of service. I think it was some form of sleep apnea but she didn't like to discuss it much and was unprepared to give up the booze which seemed to be the main trigger although she could also drop of without it on occasion. I myself have always been a bad sleeper and it can sometimes take me hours to get off although If I tend to make up for it with a longer sleep at the weekend. If I've had a few beers I will get off ok but awaken after four or five hours and sometimes struggle to get back off again

Isn’t the Anxiety & Depression thread better for this? So it’s taken seriously?

"''Other than that, what can work is staying up until you just can no longer stay awake'' In theory that can work, but find once you get into bed you annoyingly don't feel as tired. Also for me living in this climate I always (have to) have a shower before I turn in, so don't suppose that helps (me)."

"My missus is like that, even after a cup of strong coffee. She only has to look at the pillow and she's deeply in the land of nod. I'm the opposite, like the OP. I did find that after a long flight I can sleep quickly and easily. Last flight, I recorded the ambient noise in the cabin on my phone. That kind of worked for a bit, but a crying baby and repeated requests by the cabin crew to sit down because the captain had put the seat belt sign on scuppered what started as a brilliant idea. Other than that, what can work is staying up until you just can no longer stay awake. Or a couple of large pegs."

My missus is like that... has a coffee just before bed... head hits the pillow and Zzzzzzzzzzz.... gets a decent 8 hours a night.... mate has to have at least 10 hours a day otherwise falls apart.... like I said to him... you are a long time dead so why sleep that much now... think I have survived all my life on a average of between 5-6 hours kip a night... sometimes much less... tried everything... only thing that half works is reading but it has to be a Shit book... anything half decent and I'm wide awake and its daylight... other thing that works is imagining ways of murdering people and sessions with ex's.... tried sheep (counting not fucking)... pure shit

"It's always the snorers that have this talent too, usually resort to shouting some obscenity and racing to be the first to fall asleep again (they always win) At the risk of ""oooh Mrs"" comments, there's a product called Sleep-Eze (I think?) From Lush that certainly seems to help, lavender based, just spread it on your your forearms Also if you're a regular drinker you may be under the belief it helps, conversely it probably isn't, since cutting back I've certainly noticed I sleep a lot deeper than I was"

"I know what you mean, it is annoying but think it's only a small minority that drop off straight away, they're like fucking children, a bit weird that they have fuck all they want to keep about. As for the answer, it's been debated to death, so just expect more of the same advice from the ''experts'' like Oxsaw and for nothing to change. Have you tried thinking about being in a David Moyes pep talk, that might help? My biggest beef is not dropping off but always waking up during the night."

You’re problem stems from being ok with Moyes’s football….
