Yeah you can always rely on Pavlov's Wombat to return to his natural habitat in the gutter.

"No need to bring ball tampering onto a tribute thread, especially as the convicts were complicit in the very same."

Averaged almost 45 in Tests in a period when England were mediocre at best. Same average against Australia even though his career started with Warnes debut in 1993 and finished just before the 2005 Ashes series. Must have had one of the best if not the best English averages dealing with Warne & McGrath. Classy performer so maybe a good thing he wasnt tainted by the 2005 series and the admitted ball tampering that decided it Was on the coaching staff of NSW in the SHEFFIELD SHIELD for a while before joining the England setup

"One of my favourite cricketers of that (or any) generation. Not flamboyant at the crease, but sold his wicket dearly. Really maximised the ability he had. As others have said, dug England out of many a hole. Always remember him and Nasser's massive partnership against the convicts at Edgbaston, in the late 90's."

Truly gutted RIP Thorpey Watched a lot of cricket mid 80s to mid 90s and it often seemed like we were pinning our hopes on him (and Atherton) to pull out some sort of miracle. Top bloke too by all accounts

"FC You'll have to excuse the BBC on this one, mate. The ICC made 'batter' the official term a couple of years ago. Wankers."

Gutted by this. He was a batting stalwart during a terrible era for English test cricket in the 1990's. Wasn't there a story that he tried to top himself a couple of years ago? I wonder if the demons returned? Very sad news.

"Such a shame and far too young, He was great playing on the back foot cuttung and pulling. 6,500 Test runs at a shade under 45 is a great record and there is that innings to close out the Test series in Pakistan as the sun was setting over Karachi."

Very sad. One of my favourites too. He was seriously ill quite suddenly a couple of years ago too wasn't he. I guess the same thing that's taken him so young.
