"Pacino, Scarface, Devils advocate, Glengarry Glenross, scent of a woman, Branco etc Deniro Taxi Driver, Once upon a time in America, Goodfellas Casino, midnight Run etc Who has the edge? And Who has a better body of work than these two?"

I'm always surprised to see Harrison Ford never gets a mention. I could probably list of 10 movies off the top of my head I'd happily watch right now. Star Wars x 3 Indiana Jones (not the recent ones) Blade Runner x 2 Apocalypse Now Patriot Games Clear and Present Danger The Fugitive

Mark Rylance, Alec Guinness, John Mills, Forest Whittaker, Karl Malden, Henry Fonda, Anthony Hopkins, all far superior in their craft than the two choices we've been given."

I posted earlier and gave De Niro the edge but did not give an answer to who has a better body of work than those two. The competition is hot and several names come to mind but the differences between them all are minimal imho. Having said that for me there is one who stands out at being best of all and that is Meryl Streep.

"As Russ has pointed out De Niro’s portrayal of Max Candy in Cape Fear was outstanding. It was one of those very rare remakes that knocks the original into a cocked hat. Robert Mitchum, in the original, got nowhere near the level of menace that De Niro came up with in the remake. They are both good actors but for me De Niro is the more versatile."

"Too difficult to decide for me. I was going to say Pacino because of Dog Day Afternoon but then I remembered Raging Bull. Just to blur the lines further, I could sit and stare at anything by Gene Hackman all day. The conversation was a masterpiece."

"Not this old chestnut! As soon as I saw the thread title, I knew it would be a Pacino vs. De Niro thread. Been done 100 times before on here, like most topics. Boring. They are both formerly superb actors who's careers have fallen off a cliff since the turn of the millennium (though Pacino did win an Emmy Award for 'Angels in America' in 2003). The Irishman was a real nadir for both of them and showed how much they (and Scorcese) had fallen. Awful, overly long, boring film which contained a ridiculous scene of a geriatric De Niro laying down a beating when pretending to be in his 30s (he could barely raise his leg) and Pacino doing his usual late-career over (ham)acting."

"Hard one. I personally think Pacino is the better actor overall. Look at the roles - Corleone, Montana, Ruggerio, Hanna, Wortzik, the devil.... Great roles played perfectly. But I do think De Niro has been in the better films generally. De Niro has shown good range though, from nutter, to gangster, to comedy roles. Personally I think De Niro's best performance is in Cape Fear. Breath taking."
