Having invested 30m on him a season ago, it was even more retarded.
Hope he gets back in the side over Soucek and gets that long awaited freekick.
Can't see anyway he gets in over Soucek...saw the other day how Potter used Soucek as a weapon to get up the field and win second balls.
I reckon he gets on the bench over Orford as things are sadly...Irving offers something he doesn't (pretty much out best 1 or 2 touch central midfield). But Ward Prowse is probably our most 'terrier' like midfielder and is a sub for Alvarez.
Be really interesting to see if Potter finds a way to make him and Soucek work in the same midfield, as they inevitably will be at some point.

I'd prefer SWP to come on rather that Guido...

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
Classic case of using a players strengths to get the best from him, he's capable of far more than we've seen but there was a reason we didn't see his true capabilities and that reason is now gone. Glad he's coming back.
Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
I'm hoping he'll be a different player under Potter.
under the dour one he was used as a defensive midfielder or left winger. This might give him a bit more freedom to sue the ball like in his first few games before he had hos creativity drilled out of

It'll be good to have another option in midfield but I find Ward Prowse can be a bit of a passenger.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
I reckon we'll see a much better player once Potter has spent time with him, I've been pleasantly surprised how quickly Potter transformed the unmotivated rabble we'd become under Lope & Moyes into an attacking unit who actually look like they're enjoying playing for the fans again

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
I was glad to see the back of him when we let him go to Forest. We paid way over the odds for a pretty ordinary player whose sole claim to fame was as a dead ball specialist. Last season he proved himself to be very unadventurous. In open play all he seemed to do were short sideways or back passes.
And seeing as Forest have hardly used him is hardly a ringing endorsement of his talent.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
I know he's played at RM and even RB on occasion. Don't think he's had too many games as a wing back though. I think he lacks the pace to really get up and down the flank like you'd want. Bit of a shame as it would be good to have a wing back who can cross the ball like he can.
Even so I'd rather him there and AWB in the back 3 than having Coufal there. Still don't get why Coufal hasn't been played as the wing back and switched roles with AWB, but I guess he lacks the legs to get up and down as well now.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
He had times even a few years back at Southampton where he found himself on the bench.
He will work hard out of possession but the problem that I saw was that he was too lightweight and not that quick to be effective pressing and protecting the ball. Kept getting caught and too easily eased off the ball. But a lot of our players suffered from that under Moyes tactics.
All we can so is see if he fares better in Potter’s set up.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
Ward Prouse imo is better than both Rodriquez and Soler, But it doesn't mean he is great. He has good stamina and generally isn't subject to injury. He will hopefully contribute more going forward and provide more of a goal threat, Having said that it is not our priority in the midfield. We need a more robust ball winner who gets forward quickly on the break. Not JWP I am sorry to say.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
Not what we need need in central midfield but an honest pro who showed he can contribute when the football is decent and a great option to have on set pieces as a game gets late.
Home grown so should slot into the squad nicely.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
If the net result if W-P back and hungry and Rodriguez and his wages on his way then I think most of us would see this a pragmatic, sensible business.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
Why was he Southampton captain?
Apart from the set pieces he must have been pretty decent at some point?
I’ve never really seen him do much in a game that wowed me but I’m willing to believe that anyone under Moyes’ regime deserves a second chance with this new style of football.

Re: Ward Prowse on his way back
Let’s see what GP has in mind for him- unless the idea is to loan him out again. Seen as he’s really helped the other players with structure and gameplan and expectations we may see some good stuff out of him.
Crazy how we bought him for a big fee and 12 months later he’s loaned to Forest where he couldn’t even get a game. In retrospect really not good value for money. We will make a huge loss on the player over the course of his contract. Hopefully that stuff stops now.
