Before Full Metal Jacket in 1987 there was The Boys in Company C from 1978, both great movies and the first half of both movies very similar with the boot camp, R Lee Ermey is a drill Sergent in both, appears about 2.30m into this clip in the same vein as FMJ, the Latino Drill Seargent is great in this as well 

Both would be in my top 5 that's for sure, Come and See is also top draw as is All Quiet on the Western Front, We Were Soldiers would round out my top 5

Add Dirty Dozen and Battle of the Bulge to my list.

All the below are great films and I loved Zulu, but for me, although not historically accurate in any shape or form "Where Eagles Dare" is my favourite.  Just loved Burton and Eastwood in an action flick.

Best cameo in a war film though goes to Del and Rodney in "The Eagle Has Landed".,
