I think it's can the  "one" exist as a stand alone act without the others.

In the case of Queen, freddie was a massive character and front man but the others did more than a fair  share of the writing and created their sound.

Yeah, I think you're probably very right. And a lot of the time, the rest of the band will likely have to just say 'yes' to take a guaranteed wage rather than the dole queue or session work.

It's fucking shit though, and those artists who were part of a proper band rather than just a singer songwriter with regular musicians in tow sign up for that behind their band's backs while pretending they are still a band are fucking scabs unless the band came to a consensus decision that was the way they had to go in order to progress.

I fucking bet the rest of them loved a cheeky piss in Hucknell's honey and lemon tea, though.

I suppose to a certain extent it depends on your viewpoint. For marketing purposes bands are usually presented as a collective or perhaps a bit of a 'gang' but this is rarely a true representation.

I spent a couple of years in the industry full-time in the 90s, but it was rarely like that. I think of each band as a company and there will usually be one or more members who are either originals or have been there a long time who are in the position of being directors or partners and reap the rewards of being at the top of the tree.

After that, lots of hired hands who are basically the company's employees. Some bands that replace members don't even pretend that they are a full member of the band proper. For example the musicians that Queen hired to fill the gaps left by Mercury and Deacon.

The best decision any band can make is to just split all of the money equally. This usually removes 99% of the fighting behind the scenes.

Queen had four songwriters in the band.
Not a fan of John Deacon's contributions but he did write a few massive hits.

Simply red is a good one- in fact when they got signed the record company said to Mick Hucknell 'we only want you, not the rest of the band.' and being the greedy cսnt that he is, he did it.
I think there's more of this out there than we necessarily realise. E.g. I understand that Hayley Williams from Paramore is the only one of that band actually with a contract with the record company.

Are we talking where there's been one constant member and a revolving door, or just where one person is so prominent that the others 'don't matter'?

I think I'd have to arge that one. Possibly because I was totally obsessed during the 'three amigos' era.

I once saw them at Hammersmith three times in four days. It would have been four but I couldn't afford it at the time.🤘😎🤘
