onsideman of course but it's another step to actually signal player that doesn't want to sign.

Excellent addition to the squad so can't complain and adds depth whoever gets the nod in the starting line up. He will be eager to do well and hopefully he will enjoy his time here and want to stay if it all works out.

"But every player can be tapped up and offered more money, fraser - loans, permanents,.academy prospects, whoever - it doesn't make players contracts pointless. I realise that Lee Trundle - every contract depends on how it's been negotiated, no?"

No issue at all with Phillips coming in and as a player. It's great news. Moyes just has to not forget about his permanent players in avour of his shiny new rental car.

"That would very much depend on how it was all negotiated, onsideman. Not all optional buy's for loaned players are the same."

"Do they? I have no idea, I also have no idea how set in stone they are. I've just read elsewhere that we couldn't agree on a fee, have no idea if true. But York has a point he's only here on loan and what would be the point of keepung and signing him for a massive fee if he had better offers... That he preferred."

We've replaced Conor Coventry with Kalvin Phillips (albeit for half a season). That's a massive upgrade to the squad. I can't see too much to moan about even if he doesn't stay on past the summer.

"Plenty do agree, fraser. That's the WHOLE point of the clause. I'm not saying we should've insisted or that the deal is no good without one, but to suggest that a unilateral option to buy at a fixed price and on fixed terms isn't worthwhile having jus doesn't make any sense, is all"

And you said we wouldn't need to upgrade if we kept Downes.

Who said that dopey? I said Phillips is a lot better player at the moment.

"Yorkammer 1:43 Fri Jan 26 That's nonsense. You might as well say that about every single contract. They're all meaningless, lets not bother"

Downes is better than Phillips? The things you learn on this site.

"Why would the player agree to that... Besides haven't we already said we can't afford his wages at that level on the long term, not officially but those are the noises being made. Maybe we didn't like the terms or couldn't afford them and think we may be able to get a better deal. Just read he had the best long pass accuracy in the league at Leeds.. Not bad for someone who can only pass sideways as I've seen a few claim on here. I'm happy with this regardless of options... He improves us this season which is great."

We went down this road with Lingard. Again cant doubt his ability but can just see in turning into a saga come June. Tbh and I know Philips is a lot better player at the moment but we could have avoided this had we kept Downes for a bit of depth.

Option to buy is a bit meaningless. Imagine there is an option to buy at £40M and the players agent has agreed £150K per week for 5 years. What then happens if another club pops up with £40M and £250K per week? Do West Ham enforce the option through the courts and have a disgruntled player on their books for 5 years?

Who's saying there's no option to buy? The BBC? Who to believe? Them or Fabrizio Romano?

"If you sign a player on loan with an option to buy, you are.signing him for an initial loan period with an option to make the deal permanent. The loaning/selling club, the loanee/buyer AND the player are all party to that contract. If the option is unilateral then no other club can step in later without a breach of contract."

With the no buy option. Could also mean Moyes ain’t going to be here come summer.?

"But what if we have an option for £40 million and he's outstanding and a club up north say Newcastle want him.. He can just say no.. That's what I'm getting at.. In all likelihood he probably would. Oh and as far as I know we're paying all his wages plus a fee. But looking at it another way if we signed him permanently now for £40 million that's £8millon a season... So half of that plus his wages comes to around £7 million which we've paid, so looking at it that way not that bad."

"I don't know what you're getting at. If ypu have an option to buy, the selling club is committed to sell to you... at a predetermined price. No other clubs can get involved"

Onsideman - So you think I'd he's that good someone else wouldn't come in and bid higher then..
