Kalvin Philips Done

Post El Coucho »

West Ham United is delighted to confirm the signing of England midfielder Kalvin Phillips on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 28-year-old joins the Hammers from Manchester City and could make his debut in Thursday’s Premier League fixture with AFC Bournemouth at London Stadium.

"What is wrong with some of you? You are such a bunch of negative cunts. We sign an England international and already he is being written off, he hasn't even kicked a ball yet! Moyes will play him, stop fretting. Remember the January windows where the same cunts were moaning about lack of signings now we do get someone he isn't good enough for us. Twats."

Wouldn't be at all surprised in Southgate drops Phillips once he is playing regularly at little ol' WH to accommodate someone who has only played four games for a big six side.

One thing I noticed is that Phillips was the set piece taker for Leeds. So he’s not bad at it. Maye JWP is more at threat from this signing. If we are chasing a game maybe Philips / Alvarez don’t come off for soucek and JWP makes way. After the set pieces not sure JWP offers that much tbh.

I’m really afraid we’re dreaming if we think Moyes is going to drop Soucek just because we have this fellow on the books. Of course he’ll dispense with someone else instead - probably Alvarez

"360. Not sure if Moyes is capable of 'feeling like an idiot'. Once Phillips is up to speed with his match fitness he could be a great addition if used properly, ie alongside Alverez and with Souseck nowhere near the pitch."

"I think Philips and Alvarez start. Moyes is weird but he’s not bat shit crazy. He’s not going to pay 150 bags a week for someone to not start. He’d feel like an idiot. Obviously depends on how well Philips plays and his fitness, so I’m sure there will be a little rotation sometimes. But it’s going to be night and day when Philips is on the picture compared to soucek. Just look at the difference Johnson made and he isn’t even a midfielder! Moyes may love his favourites. But he’s ultimately about himself and proving that he’s the smartest one in the room."

"Surely there is no way when picking his 2 holding midfielders that its not Phillips and Alvarez Even then JWP must be next man up Surely Moyes isn't that stupid, picking Soucek over any of those would be suicide for him with the fans when trying to get a new deal"

"‘We know he’ll play in midfield, alongside [Tomas] Soucek, he’ll play in that two. He’ll allow Soucek to go forward – and he sits in there, he’s a good passer, good experience,’ This is a prospect that is as grim as it is unacceptable. I'm genuinely concerned about the future if Moyes is allowed to do this."

"From that same interview, Gary Neville on the art of damning with faint praise: “Manchester City is a football team that is unique and if you’re just not quite as sharp on the ball as those around you – and he’s playing with Rodri, with Bernardo Silva, with Kevin de Bruyne – you can look a little bit like a fish out of water. “There was a little bit of that of Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City, but when he goes to West Ham, he’ll fit in there no problem. “He’s a really good player and a good, solid, David Moyes-type of thing to have on the pitch.”"

"Even Gary Neville can't see Moyes dropping big Tomas! LOL Phillips would likely play in the same position as Rice did, though he faces strong competition from Edson Alvarez, one of last summer’s signings who has impressed so far. ‘We know he’ll play in midfield, alongside [Tomas] Soucek, he’ll play in that two. He’ll allow Soucek to go forward – and he sits in there, he’s a good passer, good experience,’ Neville added."

"I don't see why he wouldn't be able to play 90 minutes. He played 90 a month ago, having not started a game for 3 months. As I said before, Lingard had played even less than Phillips and he did 90 minutes on his debut for us within a few days of joining. Scored a couple of goals as well."

"Nagel 2:57 Wed Jan 24 My apologies. I was listening to Talksport and I was sure Brazil said six games. I did think that was bit low. I'm not being negative. Just pointing out that my only concern is how truly 'match fit' he is and if he'll take a few games to get up to speed. I mean, I doubt he'd be able to play a full 90 mins in PL tomorrow."

"Good signing, will have a point to prove and an England place to fight for so like Lingard I expect him to do well. Is he eligible for the Europa?"

Phillips has managed 90 mins for England this season. So fit enough for international games = fit enough for the Premier League.

"""How Deep is your Love?"" by the BeeGees comes to mind. Having chased Phillips since his Leeds days, Moyes's love for him is no doubt just as deep as his love was for Lingard. So I have no hesitation in predicting that he will be straight into the starting eleven and will play at least 80 minutes next match. I only hope that if and when everyone is fit, Moyes's deep love for Soucek won't blind him to what he can see in every game, namely that Alvarez is a far superior player to Soucek."

"Yeah, he's no going to be in dreadful shape having been training properly with them, but likely (if we're sensible) we'll just having him go 60 mins or on at half time a couple of times just to get him up to speed a little. Would be foolish to just play him for 90 mins and then he does a hamstring or something."

"Russ, it was 6 starts yes, but he played 31 games for them in total, so not that farcical. The exact same stuff about needing a bunch of 90 minute games to build up match fitness was trotted out when Lingard first joined. It was proved completely wrong pretty much right away, and Lingard had played less than Kalvin and had barely featured on the bench for Man Utd."

"Yorkammer 1:43 Wed Jan 24 You are right, up to a point. Yes, he's been on the bench so is fit. But not playing regularly and losing that 'match' fitness is a factor. Six games in his time at City is farcical. He will need a few games of a whole 90 mins to start to build his match fitness."

"Apparently Kalvin is a bit prone to overindulging on the chocolate cake and stuff. The problem at the World cup was that players don't train with the same level of intensity as at their clubs, and he is the type who needs to work it off more than others do, so a month with a less strict regime didn't do him any favours on that front. Should probably have sorted it himself though, without needing to be told."
