Re: Public opinion on immigration
"Not only culture but basic logic indicates that open, tolerant and strong civil societies create open strong and tolerant individuals who are less concerned about how bad other people are in Saudi Arabia and more focused on what they can do for the public interest. Ministers who try to please that kind of crass roots tend to strong in their jobs as well rather than talking bollocks about sending migrants to Ruanda while the Police clearly hate their guts."
Re: Public opinion on immigration
I am surprised no-one has mentioned that the EU have supposedly toughened their laws on immigration along with several of their member countries. France has passed laws to restrict immigration; bringing in family members and delay the ability to claim welfare benefits. It has the French socialists in an uproar... Denmark has apparently said no to multi-cultural immigration too and already had some of the toughest immigration laws in the EU. For me though Islam is the prevalent problem. It is incompatible with the best aspects of Christianity - tolerance; live and let live; respect for minorities etc. Even though most Christians do not participate they do mostly believe in this culture. Islam doesn't do that very well. In the meantime Britain still fucks around with Rwanda as the answer to something or other...
Re: Public opinion on immigration
stewie Thanks for the considered reply. But I'm not at all sure it really is as simple as you'd have it - though I wish it was. But let's leave it here or we'll up down a multi-tunneled rabbit hole that has no clear exit point.

Re: Public opinion on immigration
"It’s actually not all that difficult, Coffers – and drawing dividing lines along race, skin colour or anything else is precisely what creates the issue. What you have is intellectual pygmies like Catweazle below prattling on with his usual pseudo-intellectual word salad - repeating what i had already said but pretending it disagrees - about civilised societies in an attempt to signal their own virtue, when precisely none of their positions stand up to any scrutiny. What, for example, is people’s position on the human rights record of places like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan and countless others? Where homosexuals are stoned to death, thrown from the rooftops of buildings, or made to live in secrecy because their sexual preferences are illegal. Do we want that here? Most ‘civilised’ people would suggest no. We are an extremely tolerant & diverse country. Those places are not. Their culture, therefore, does not mesh well with ours. Ergo, multiculturalism doesn’t work. As I said, it’s really very simple."

"stewie griffin 12:10 Wed Dec 20 What is culture? Is it defined only in terms of heritage? Or race or skin colour or religion or mother tongue? Or something else? Is the culture of, say, a Geordie the same as that of someone from Cornwall or Wales? Culture is a painfully difficult word to define accurately and fully."

Re: Public opinion on immigration
May I suggest that what doesn’t work is having a lot of people lacking a sense of being part of a greater whole (sometimes known as civil society) all living together. Like Essex.

"Multi ethnicity and multiculturalism works in cities where the people share the same core values. The problem arises when the values are different. Lindon had huge diversity if values in the 19th century but the majority were British. There were problems around wealth, class, religion and immigration."

"You'd be wrong there again, I'm afraid, comma. It hardly makes anyone a genius knowing both that Japan is one of the safest countries on the world, or that they have strict immigration rules. It's not a big secret of either."

"Japan is a country with huge demographic problems caused by a shrinking, and at the same time an ageing, population. The birth rate has plummeted to 1.3 children per couple way below the replacement rate of 2.2. You never guess what is being proposed in Japan to help ease future problems."

"Japan is one of the safest counties in the world. It's low crime rate is put down to the Japanese culture and the Japanese “kokuminsei,” or national character. It also has strict immigration rules. If you open up your borders, your country will turn to shit."
Re: Public opinion on immigration
Stewie There is no way families pouring over from places like Pakistan and other third world shit holes will drop their religion (which defines them in every way) and adopt whatever it is you're proposing is English Culture. Most end up here decades and never work or need to learn the language with t.v. stations from back home and whole communities speaking their native tongue. The UK is absolutely fucked. It is way too late to save those cities today and god only knows what the landscape will look like in 30 or 40 years time. With young children my only ambition left in life is to prepare them to be able to leave the UK when old enough.

Re: Public opinion on immigration
"So much conflation of multiple different topics under one banner of ‘immigration’. Let’s be clear – the ‘right’ absolutely love immigration. Drives down wages & working conditions, and boosts business profitability. And best of all, no fucking unions. The ‘left’ do not like immigration, because the people that suffer the most because of it are the working class, the very people they were set up to represent. Anyone with a vague passing interest in politics understands this. By the same token, the ‘right’ hate illegal immigration. A drain on their taxes, resources that are scarce, and so on. The ‘left’ don’t mind it so much, because - not without reason in fairness – in many cases these are people fleeing war torn or shithole countries and are just looking for a safe place to live for them and their families. Nothing inherently wrong with either argument, to be frank. Underpinning it all, is the topic of multi-culturalism, which is the real issue here. It’s failed. It’s an absolute fucking disaster. And should be stamped out immediately. There is one culture, and that is the culture of the host country. Anyone coming in – legally or illegally – should adopt the culture of the country they’re going to, or be deported immediately. Not remotely complicated. And the funny thing is, that there isn’t single person that disagrees. There is, though, a massive group of people who will claim they do"
Re: Public opinion on immigration
I don’t think you’ll find anyone saying this country should have zero immigration. It needs controls and some kind of system which means the people coming here benefit the country as well as themselves. What’s ridiculous is the immediate shouting of ‘far right’ or ‘racism’ towards anyone who wants to control immigration.

“In a 2014 @Channel4News wrote to 43 police forces & 31 replied into the ethnicity of suspected grooming gangs. Asian-57 White-7 That means there were 8X more Asian gangs. Bear in mind 87% of the population was white & 5% Asian.”
