West Ham agree deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

By David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell

West Ham have agreed a deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The deal is set to be worth £38million ($51.3m) with £3m worth of add-ons and a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

The 21-year-old Portugal youth international will be West Ham’s sixth signing of the summer, with the London side also in talks to sign midfielder Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco.

Fernandes joined Southampton in the summer of 2024 from Sporting CP and has made 46 appearances for the south-coast side that got relegated last season, scoring four goals and registering seven assists. He has played 36 times for Portugal’s youth teams up to under-21 level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season with seven games still to play, only a year after their promotion.

West Ham have lost their opening three games of the 2025-26 season, two in the Premier League and one against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. They are next in action away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the league.

Surely if we are skint we are better off going to identify the next one for £12m instead of paying over 3 times as much for this guy a year later after a shocking season?
Why do you think he has a shocking season?
Really? 🤨
Did Scotty Parker have a shocking season the year we finished stone last?

We dont have courage of our convictions. It's chicken and egg with Sullivan. He's risk averse but also cheap. So what he really wants is "cheap" and proven. Hence over the hill PL former stars.

Sullivan considers 2-5m punt money....once you're above that he expects certainty.

Yeah, that's true
However I've read on here that Lopetegui was offered him a year ago and trurned him down, in which case who would've scouted him then or was he just being hawked around?
I've read it was TS and Loppy that didn't want him.. So some (not you) can't have a meltdown when it looked like we were buying the Brazilian keeper cause the manager wanted someone else and then moan when Sullivan didn't go over Loppy's head..

Whilst true, Sydney, he makes us A LOT better in our weakest area. I'll take it at this late stage although obviously we should have got someone better many weeks ago.

He's going to have to play like Zidane to gain that sort of increase in value here.

Yes, Chelsea just paid 40M for Garnacho who isn't exactly a slouch.

He better be good. Southampton have signed Finn Azaz - an Irish international who  i quite hoped we'd have a look at. So we'll see who did the best business in time.

Aye, the one I watched, in 80% of the clips he was regaining possession and running forward with the ball. Which is exactly what we need.

Zico, read in a few different sources that he is a good tackler, inceptions, duels and gives good defensive cover in the midfield.

Been looking at the Southampton forums as know nothing about him. Seems they think he can be fairly creative but not too many goals and not a tackler, so hope Magassa (if he joins) can do that as we need a ball winner in there.  On their forums it had a few posts related to the comment "Rumour has it that he travelled to West Ham without Saints permission." and he went from hero to zero in a few posts!

I actually strongly agree. The eye test is always the best way to gauge a player. When I add stats occasionally it's because I used to get sick of people saying repeatedly, where's the evidence so I fell in to that trap.

And I promise not to keep bringing up Souceks quality goalscoring record though in future. 🤐😅
