Until West Ham find out mojo again,  a game against a David Moyes managed side will always have some kind of extra significance.

Layer on the pressure on Potter who looks like a dead man walking, and this game is under intense scrutiny. 

It looks for all the world like Potter has two games, not to save his job, but to buy a stay if execution, against Everton and Arsenal, made none the easier by these two being amongst the best set piece side in the league....the Hammers clear achilles heel.

The stats this far have backed up the eye test...West Ham ARE terrible at defending the box, none of the keepers help out on crosses, and we give up corners willy nilly.

But if Potter is to cling on, nothing but a win here will do.

He has charisma does our Nuno, and we haven't had a manager with that for some time.  It was only a point but it actually put me in a good mood for the rest of the evening, rather then the foul moods I've been in after a game for the past 18 months or so.

Greatly encouraged.

Much better second half - and a team that showed a real determination and spirit after a poor first half. Not sure if they got the hairdryer treatment, but Nuno clearly had words at half-time.

Finished looking the stronger team, and played vertically (which we rarely did under Potter).

Diouf and Summerville down the left, plus a returning AWB/KWP and Bowen down the right gives us something out wide.

Lots to sort out, still. Fullkrug is very poor as a lone striker. He’s just not mobile enough. Seems like somebody who’d play better in an old style 4-4-2. But he gives us nothing down the middle on his own.

Something to build on.

Interesting that Nuno kept Fulkrug on so long.
I view that as wanting him getting more match fitness in his legs for the games ahead.

If I'm being hypercritical I did think Nuno should have brought him off a lot sooner and got Wilson on to try and nick a winner. We were never going to score with him on the pitch in his current piss poor form and fitness.

Fullkrug just seems half a yard off the pace in England - all of the time. He’s second to everything. Forgot his shooting boots today, too. So I’m really not sure what he gives us.

There must be a player in there somewhere, as he’s been Germany’s #9 at times. But he was awful again today. Wilson seems head and shoulders the better of the two.

Fullkrug needs a goal, and some confidence, quickly.

Really chuffed tonight. Probably our best performance of the season given how low in confidence we were  Seeing Potts come on gave everyone a mighty lift. Second half we were so mobile as the players are used to the counter attacking style. Nuno is a proper coach. Hopefully we've struck gold.

I can easily imagine young Potts tearing around the Training pitches last couple of days seriously impressing Nuno. That's what got him on the Bench and brought on to play. He doesn't play any other way apart from being switched on and very tidy with the ball. I genuinely believe he's going to be a very good player for us for years to come. Got that unfazed air about him which has been past down from his old man. Very similar in that respect giving off a calmness to the Team that's infectious.

Ok I'm going to bring it up.. Anyone else notice a markedly different performance from the much maligned (for good reason) Kilman today under Nuno? For me he played well tonight and more like how I'd expect him to play.

He needs to produce consistency though like tonight and I do still worry about finding him a regular partner alongside him as I'm never at ease with Mavropanos there. Maybe Igor could be the answer as Todibo is clearly too unprofessional to be relied upon regularly. .

 

 

 

 

Yea..he showed a bit more aggression (for him) and got some good blocks and tackles in, but he is a fanny at attacking headers, and just a fanny in general.
hopefully Nuno can sort him out ..we need it

On a basic level, I’m so much happier with us playing vertically far more often.

Potter’s sideways sides just suck the life, movement and momentum out of players and teams.

It wasn’t pretty at times tonight, but having an extra passing option who wasn’t a third centre back or yet another deep-lying midfielder going sideways/backwards, meant that we looked to get forward quicker. It was refreshing.

 

 

Agree, you get up the pitch quicker and also take the game to the opposition and give them something to worry about.    The side/backwards passing constantly put ourselves under pressure.  With that style of passing you're playing into the hands of high pressing teams.

In open play, he was definitely a bit better than normal. But he was poor again at set pieces. Mind you, he’s not the only one struggling with set pieces. We do have a huge problem with them, as everybody knows.

I’m hoping that’s a coaching thing and Nuno can sort it out.

It was just much more enjoyable to watch. Players getting up the pitch. Actually slinging purposeful crosses in the box instead of cutting back to pass it around aimlessly in our own half again. Fancy Diouf is going to be pivotal in Nuno’s system. Enjoyed watching Tarkowski running backwards as Diouf sailed past him, the prick. 

Nuno seems to be a far better man manager and people person. Not sure I ever saw Potter talking to players. Too busy biting his coat collar trying to think of what cliches he can fit into his post match interview.

Positive signs. Shame about Fullkrug. Need a mobile centre forward.
