Well it's a fast turnaround for this one. After a hard fought, but somewhat disappointing point at Old Trafford, we head to the south coast for an arguably more difficult looking game on paper.
Brighton have been a bogey side since they arrived in the division, as well as being the envy of many fans for their progressive owner and stellar recruitment model.
Teamwise, Nuno gets to 'bring' Paqueta back (I won't use the term 'welcome'), and the messaging around Summerville remains opaque at best. Plus as to what happened to Guilherme who knows, but with both him and Igor missing we went from a squad of 3 Braziliians to none versus Man Utd in one fell swoop.
This leaves at least a decision around Soucek, but if Summerville (or Guilherme) were to be available, another decision around 2 of 3 from Fernandes, Magassa, and Potts.
Predicted Lineup
I'm working on the basis that Paqueta will come back in, and Summerville will at best be fit for the bench:
Areola
Wan Bissaka Mavropanos Todibo Diouf
Magassa Potts
Bowen Paqueta Fernandes
Wilson
Subs: Hermansen, Kilman, KWP, Irving, Kante, Earthy, Guilherme, Summerville, Marshall
Predicted Score: Brighton 2 - 1 West Ham
Brighton remain high up in the current form table, scoring twice as many as they concede. West Ham are midtable over the last 5 games, are at a scoring ratio of roughly 1:1.
Hard to see anything but a defeat here, but we have a punchers chance (all be it, the blows themselves are fairly lightweight and will need to find the Brighton chin with surgical precision to knock them out).

Another missed opportunity.
Weird lineup, a point not enough.
Going down, fuck Nuno and double fuck Sullivan
The lineup was good in the end actually.
It was his changes that let him down.
Hoping to see more of Guido, as I thought he was exceptional today.

Yes, we wasted opportunities. The second time Wilson broke for goal, Bowen sprinted 60 yards or more for an easy square pass and in on goal. Wilson fkd around and then shot wide, when the pass would've been by far the easiest option.
You can thank Wilson’s low salary and heavily weighted goal bonus for his greediness there. Fucked me right off that actually.
Apart from the fact he got an asset by putting Bowen through

I don’t understand why they spent so much time checking the handball if it was irrelevant?
The overlooking of the foot up and dangerous play was highly questionable as well.
Still, it’s all on Nuno, as they hadn’t registered a shot on target until he decided to park the bus on our six yard area.
Another “ park the bus “ wanker. Tedious.

The refs were correct in implementation of the laws as they stand. You can argue the current law is stupid obviously but the refs got the decision right.

So if that’s handball in the centre circle why isn’t it handball in the penalty area?

Villa are the form team currently. After not winning in their first 7 games they’ve won every game since I think? Then City away. A tough run if fixtures that from Biurnrmouth on I expected very little.
We had the better chances but only 1 or maybe 2 in our squad can finish. Its a real problem now we ate organised and defending set pieces properly.
On their goal it seems to have gone 360 degrees and back to intent? But as others say, depends on where it happens. Officials are inconsidrent in their interpretation

We struggle with all these refs being gay Northerners
The Northern bit means we get screwed v Liverpool
The homosexuality means we get nothing v Brighton & Tottenham
And Chelsea. Don't forget Chelsea.

It wasn't a hand ball because the goal didn't come directly from it, if Areola didn't save it then it would have been disallowed..
Mads in... No way he saves it

That's what concerns me, it's 1 unconvincing win against a poor Burnley side in 5 games. We need to start winning again to really dig us out this hole.
It’s an improvement on potter.
Potter is not a barometer for anything.

Handball on day and the scorer knew it was he gave a wry smile then did the old religious crossing of himself for the good fortune.

Not seen the game but noticed we scored after replacing Rodriguez & bringing on a striker
Mavropanos was standing upright so wasn’t one of those high boots that someone ducks into. Too honest , if he’d gone down holding his head it would be disallowed
And if a handball allows a player to get the ball and shoot and the goal then results surely that should be disallowed
Will be forgotten by 6pm. If that was against a Sky favourite there would be days of discussion & questions in Parliament
Would have taken a point pre match but when you lead after 91 mins & concede that sort of goal it feels like a defeat
Villa & Man City next

Not losing games is also good especially away at in form sides. Points on the board. It’s an improvement on potter. We are so much better pressing higher up the pitch. As soon as we get deep and try and defend is when we look ever so vulnerable. We do need to beat villa at home next week and that will be a tough ask but i feel better about that prospect after today.

I’m starting to wonder if Mavro has his head screwed on backwards. It’s unbelievable the amount of times he gets his head on the ball from a corner and the ball goes anywhere but in the back of the goal. He must lead the league in missed chances from headers inside the box.

14 shots away from home isn't parking the bus, the last ten minutes was and it failed again.
Yes, true, although while I'll praise Wilson for his part in the goal, his decision to shoot when he had Bowen to his right and Paqueta to his left a few minutes later was unbelievably poor. That could've been 2-0 and job done

He should have kept Fernandes on the pitch, he was having a MOTM performance.
I'd have taken a point before kick off but we could/should be leaving with all three.

Not sure what to make of that. On the one hand when I saw the team I thought we would get a battering, at the same time I would have taken a point, but have come away disappointed that we didn't take all three. Must confess I thought it was hand ball but I don't neccessarily agree that it was a high boot enough for a free kick. If it was our player doing an overhead kick and that had sailed into the top corner we would be giving the officials pelters for disallowing a great strike. Yeah ok, Mav could have gone down holding his head but again I hate the play acting we have in today's game so fair play he didn't. Again if it were at the other end and a Brighton player had gone down holding his face we would all be calling him a cheat.
Whislt not enough end product if we were going to sit deep I would have left Summerville on for the pace and outball, that said Wilson came on and played his part in the goal so swings and roundabouts. Bit surprised he took Fernandes off but again if sitting deep Soucek's height was obviously the plan. I just think we went too deep, and didn't leave ourselves an outlet. We sat rigid and fairly deep for most of the game and defended well but sitting in our own box for the last 10 was asking for trouble. Not sure a debut at this stage of a game when you are 1-0 up was the right call, but considering Diouf is off to African nations and we all want to see more youth players again then it's the flip of the coin if it's right or wrong.
Positives are we are definitely defending better especially at set pieces and we have got two points away this week at grounds we probably didn't expect anything. Negatives are conceding a late goal by going too deep and a poor set of attacking set pieces again. If we are going to play like that in certain games we need to work on our set pieces. I'm still not convinced by Nuno but the team do seem to be responding better to him than they were under Potter.

It’s just a completely flawed logic behind the handball rule. Might as well have let the initial shot in as then it’s disallowed. How can it then not be handball when the goal comes from the same exact piece of play. It’s just complete nonsense.
I also reckon if a defender handballed it like that, it would be given genuine scrutiny for a penalty.
Agree with this 100%
