Sold - I remember John in his shop used to check all the videos late evening as people just sent the box back without the tape, or a wrong tape, that sort of thing that you will know only too well. One night he checked one and it wasn't right so he just put it in the video recorder he had in the shop just to see what it was. He watched films in the shop to pass time when no custom was about. It was a rather erotic soft porn of a lady in the shower. She looked familiar and to his horror he realised it was the customer. He called, left as innocent a message as he could on her answer phone about the missing film. Two days later a Range Rover pulls up. a little boy runs in. quick exchange of tapes as mummy was in the car and John ever saw her again!"

Surface Yes Grace Kelly was stunning then. Believe or not she was obsessed with Ray Milland of all people.

Zico… don’t know mate… you’d think they’d be worthless but then again 20 years ago we was saying the same about vinyl. I lost count of the amount of tapes that I had to repair… splice out a few seconds that had been chewed up in someone’s machine… lot of time the customer would just come in and leave the whole VCR with us whilst I had to take the bloody thing apart just to save the tape. Some of the vids were £50.00+ which back then was a fortune… so you can imagine it goes out a couple of times and gets stuck in a machine!! Amazing really we made money with the mark up when we was putting them out daily rentals from £1-00 to £1-50 a night but we made an absolute fortune… went from almost poverty to a 5 bedroom house in Thorpe Bay (backing on to Thorpe Hall golf course) in the space of 2 years… was a great few years until satellite reared it’s ugly head.

"zico... yeah seems like a lifetime ago now... still can't get my head around having a platform that now you pay £11 a month you can have at the click of a remote every single Disney classic film ever made... we used to have to rent from Disney and Warner Brothers... around a tenner a month... and these were for shit films.. no classics but shit like Blackbeards Ghost, That Darn cat and the Black Hole... for I'd say 4 years it was Massive... weekends literally half our stock out... and when we had the bad snow in 86(?) those two weeks I'd swear almost everything was out... bloke even hired How to Pass your Driving test... Oh he'd passed his test he just wanted something to watch !! Oh when we started off we done a nice range of under the counter stuff... that's how I ended up with more MATES than anyone else.... SWT"

"Northern Sold 2:45 Tue Mar 7 That's what I miss. We had a video library right at the bottom of our schools drive. Over the years I became good friends with the owner, god rest his soul, and I can honestly say in all the years I knew him he never once gave me a bad film. The only thing he wouldn't advise on was comedy as it's so personal. Those days went with the youngsters working at Blockbuster who generally didn't have a clue and now you trawl through Netflix etc with no real idea on what's good or not on the new stuff. My mate Steve used to love a ""comedy"" called The Heavenly Kid. Awful film. John at the shop said to me "" Your mate could come in here and look at 1000 titles and still take out the crappiest film there!"" My top three favourites of all time are probably Hitchcock's Rear Window, Back to the Future and Jaws. Probably seen better films than the second two but hose three I can still watch over and over. Rear Window is to me a masterpiece although others may say Vertigo for instance was better. As you say film is very personal."

Swiss‚Ķ our family owed a video shop in the 80‚Äôs‚Ķ I was manager for about 6 years‚Ķ I watched everything and anything as would have to suggest films to customers who were undecided‚Ķ didn‚Äôt get too many chuck their VHS and Betamax‚Äôs at my head on returning them saying what a bunch of arty load of old cսnt‚Ķ so it was probably more a case of me listening to the Style Council‚Ķ.
