Our political class have no allegiance to the idea of nation state. They know talking tough on immigration will win votes but they have no intention of doing anything about it. Also, immigration is a problem down stream of fertility crisis. All Western countries have a welfare state and low fertility rates creating an aging population. Politicians know you can't have low immigration and a welfare state. So they need to get elected by either selling the idea of high immigration or selling the idea of dismantling the welfare state.
