"My earliest recollection of lower division humiliation is Mansfield in the cup and then Blackpool in the cup, both were with Greenwood"

Can someone more energetic than me found out which West Ham manager has the worst record against lower-division clubs in the cups? I bet it isn't Moyes. I'd be surprised if he's in the bottom three

"daveyg - could've, would've, but you can't be sure. I think you underestimate the step-up to first team football. The fact that they beat a below-strength Bristol Rovers proves nothing. The other thing that makes me wary is that I remember when BFS played half a dozen of our highly rated youths in a cup game and they got thrashed. It's definitely a challenge to find a balance between playing safe and giving the young players a chance. I think we should be loaning more of them out and also following City's example by putting buy-back clauses in if we end up selling them."

"Exile. Disagree. They have been playing well as a squad. Thus when a player comes in or out as Mubama has done for awhile they still perform. Last weeks win at Bristol Rovers was done as one of their supporters said "" without 2 of their best players "". Coventry and Mubama. Marshall, Earthy,Kouda and Mubama rotated last year regularly. This year without Mubama starting it's been the other 3. 6 wins on the bounce then Johnson,Mubama and Coventry play .They get a point in the end against Southampton. Kehrer.Ogbonna,Ings,Benrhama and Soucek didn't need to play. If Moyes had played a 3-4-3 like the U21s do then it would have worked out to bring 3 or 4 from the start. Casey,Mavropanos,Johnson Chester's,Fornals,Soucek,Scarles Kudus,Mubama,Cornet Could have worked easily. Changing it would have been easy with 5 subs. We didn't learn much from the orginal line up that we didn't know already."

"Noah 2:22 Thu Sep 28 '25 years ago we were struggling with Emley Fucking Town!' Emley Town, eh! A 5 year-old SurfaceJnr's first match. He was delighted with the 1-0 result and general performance. Happily, in the intervening 25 years I (ably abetted by West Ham) managed to turn him into a cynical old curmudgeon just like his dad. He did name his pet rabbit after Stan Lazaridis, though, so he was always on the right track."

"OK, so if we beat Arsenal that obviously mean they are out, plus Newcastle or Manu go out, but it still leaves one of them left in and very likely Chelsea and Liverpool. It's tough and I won't be getting excited about another victory parade just yet."

"SurfaceAgentX2Zero 11:55 I hear you. Agree rounds 2/3 of this one and 3 of the FA cup are usually OK but that's almost a given and so often in the 4th round of a cup we'll get a stinker at almost the earliest realistic possibility. Would just be nice to get a decent run through to a QF or SF for once. It does happen for a club fairly often but we always seem to pull a team from Manchester or Liverpool or similar out of the hat somewhat too early in the competition. Looking at our FA cup history, Man City or Man U 5 times form the last 11 years is a joke- although to be fair that is mixed in with some embarrassing losses which we should have avoided. EFL cup not so bad but we've come through a large amount of early stinkers in that competition. 6 from the last 11 have been against a 'big six' team albeit some in the QF round."

"Don't forget, at least half of the U21 side is made up of members of last year's all-conquering U18s. They're a well managed side that are used to playing together - classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. To take two or three of that side and stick them in with a bunch of first team squad players would be an entirely different kettle of fish and you couldn't expect the same level of performance from them."

"I appreciate that you can't compare exactly, no too games are the same but the U21 beat a slightly weakened Bristol Rovers side away in the EFL a couple of weeks ago and looked fantastic doing it. The crowd last night etc... would have made a difference but it would be interesting to see the U21 up against that Lincoln side that are one place below Rovers in League 1."

"El Scorchio 1:30 Thu Sep 28 'Ffs. Can’t we ever get a nice comfortable cup run at least for a couple of rounds one day?' 2nd round: Bye 3rd round: Lincoln City It doesn't get much more comfortable than that, mate. I know we are Champions of Europe, but let's not come over all Manchester City"

Ings has flopped but it was a sensible signing on paper compared to many others in the past. Tactics certainly don’t help him.

Mubama is the focal point of a front line in an excellent young side….he comes into the senior side and his role changes to one of an outlet that is rarely involved….of course he’s going to struggle…..they all are in that team…

"""Can’t work out why Mubama does not get a start in a game like this."" --------------------- I am sure there was one game in Europe that he did start and had a dreadful game. Or did I imagine the starting bit? I know he played a half where he was poor and haven't seen him since."

"The negativity on here, unbelievable. We won playing our reserve side. Next round of the cup. I have flashbacks about losing to Hereford, Torquay and Wrexham to name just a few. Moyes never loses to minnows, he gets the job done. We‚Äôve become so good at beating smaller teams under Moyes that TV companies no longer feel the need to have the game shown live ?üòÅ"

…. Moyes will play a weakened side though as he then has an excuse for losing.

Arsenal will make changes. If we just play our strongest side we should win and would then have a great chance of winning this cup.
