Probably something .to do with superstition. Footballers have a rep.for being about as superstitious as you can be. One player probably accidentally ripped his sock recently and played really well in a match....and then his team.won when he wore that ripped sock.

This trend of players cutting holes in their socks- why? Nobody can understand it... Nobody with any sense would do it...
