Amphibians / Pets

Does anyone on the board keep Amphibians as pets.

Currently have some Dart Frogs (Dendrobates Leucomelas) and looking to get some Fire Bellied Toads and European Green Tree Frogs, to go with the Tropical Fish setup.

Also thinking at some point a Budgerigar (if can get that one past the wife).

What pets do you keep?

I have three water snails (well I did have, last time I checked), I don't really consider them as pets as such, but have called one of them White Tip.

Found out yesterday that the collective noun for newts is an ARMADA - I love that, got to be my favourite name for a group of animals, not that I was keeping a top 10 or anything.

Nice when it's done, although the brown gunk is the 'good stuff' with all the healthy bacteria in it so dont want to get rid of too much of it....like you say....get the flow going well again.

Just spent an hour doing the big annual external box-filter clean - amazing the gunk that builds up over time. And yes, the pipes are now clear; pressure is right back up so I can declare a happy ending 🥳

Sydney,

All this moaning about frogs making a bit of noise is a  bit over the top, don’t you think?

They slaughtered nearly a million people in Algeria.

You’re getting off lightly.

Probably worth keeping the frogs around as they must take care of the insects and spiders.
Well they will help, but also stocked the pond with crimson spotted rainbow fish, these little fuckers munch on Mosquito Lavea like its curry to a piss head 😋so its not really an issue.

Quite an interesting post by you Sydney. Better than your usual dribble that comes out your mouth (and fills your pond).
Do you let the koi suck your gonads when you swim?
id like to shit in your pond and stamp on your frogs.

I got a shit load of Amphibians! Can't get rid of the fuckers either 🐸

House i bought has an old swimming pool but im past all that stuff even living in Sydney so converted it into a Koi Pond, built an island and planted varies plants and looks really good, stocked it with small Koi which was a mistake, within a week the local Herons, Cormorants and Kookaburras had had the lot 😡

Re stocked but this time with larger Koi and they have flourished, and a couple are absolute monsters ☠ Still go for a swim in the pool/pond in summer and the Koi follow me around, bit weird, reckon they are sizing me up 😨

Anyway, getting the pond up and going was enjoyable but the only downside is every frog in the area seems to have moved in and the noise at night this time of year being spring and breeding season has the little cunts as noisy as fuck😍 The Peron's Tree frog are the worst, easy enough to catch as when caught in bright light they freeze so as long as your quick you can catch them, i then re home them (can't kill them😿) a few miles down the road to a creek but im sure the lillte fuckers are homing? As once im rid of one lot within a few days the racquet starts again, rinse and repeat🙄 Get Water Dragons as well, they eat frogs so welcome but once the dog gets wind of them, she spends her whole time hunting them so they fuck off.

Pickle,

Do you catch your dinner from the tank?

Have plenty of newts in the pond. Daughter has a pet rat. Used to have two of them but one died of a heart attack or something.  Was a bugger burrying it with no rain for a month. Always get you pet to die in a wet spell.

Yeah I get that. Water changes though...twice per week. Frogs you just feed every other day, and trim the plants maybe once every 3 to 6 months.

I've planted heavily my fish tank, so do a water change maybe once every 2 months, with a top up once every couple of weeks.

Actually, now the system is stable, all I have to do is change 1/4 of the water a week in two batches (50:50 tap and inverted osmosis filtered). Feed is frozen daphnia etc + dry flake). Can’t go wrong really.

Nice setup! Got a 300l planted tropical tank with Angels, Harlequins, Cardinals and Kribs.

Had a couple of others, but turning them into Frog tanks (just as interesting but much less maintenance).
