Knocking Van

Back in the day , early 80’s when I just left school I use to go out in the knocking van. We would usually meet up outside the Princess Alice boozer in Forest Gate and drive all over London selling household items, such as ironing board covers, pegs, dusters, dish’s clothes etc.

we had some dodgy fake ID from the “youth employment scheme” we would pull out and use as our pitch. There’d be about 10 of us and did we get into some shit. Some fucking hilarious stories. Did it for a while, more for a laugh than for the money but we use to make a few bob.

I remember we kicked off with some Tottenham fans in Broxbourne. we also threw a few punches at the Elephant and Castle with a little firm we ran into.

we were out of control back then.

Anyway, a different world back then, couldn’t get away with anything like that now. Not with all the camera’s everywhere.

Anyone else on here ever go out on a knocking van?

Glen passed away 8 years ago now.

Time flies, but Stratford isn't the same without him.
Jason was and probably still is  hard work...

Yeah, I bumped into him in Bristol the day after the FA Cup final n Cardiff, Glen had lost him, I had to look after him and get him home.
He wasn’t the only one you had to look after, you were like Nanny McPhee that weekend.

Fucking hell, that was 8 years ago  I remember him complaining about the pain in his leg.
Yeah, I went to see him in hospital (took him a McDonalds) he asked me to take a picture of Harold Wilson statue (we had Huddersfield away that weekend) I was due to go back in Monday with pie and mash, messaged him Sunday and then Monday with no reply, then got the phone call.

I remember a few sessions in the Forest Gate Hotel in Godwin Rd/ Tylney Rd, could get very messy.
You'd have been in the same hotel as me then.

Yeah shame he passed, he had cancer too.
He was working on a stool in Stratford.
Jason was always harmless

pretty sad what happened to Sean.

Did you know Derek and Roger Hilton, couple of brothers from Stratford that are no longer with us. Now I’m going way back but both were a couple of diamonds.

I know his brother Laurie died from cancer, and his other brother Sean passed away as well.
I know Jason's sister is still about.

That knocking van program was well funny...
Last I heard he is, however his other brother Glenn passed away a year or two ago unfortunately. Always liked Glenn.
Were you on the Forest Gate Van?

because it was mental when I look back at it. Some real characters on the van, lost touch with most of them.

I know we weren’t the only ones doing it at the time, just throwing it out there, you never know.

We’re all West Ham fans after all.
You live in America now?
Yes I do. Send me a who mail
