RIP to a proper football legend

I can remember another dismal performance by West Ham when Manchester United won 2-6 at Upton Park to win the league. Law took the piss out of John Charles and placed both of his hands over Charles’ face. Charles pushed him away and the referee awarded them a penalty. Nothing has changed over the years.

As said below just hearing the name did something. Up there with Dalglish and Souness as the best Scots.

He seems to have been/looked ill for years, so probably did well to reach 84.

Although I remember us beating Huddersfield with a 17-year-old Denis Law in our 1957/8 promotion year 5-2 Unfortunately I saw this game as wellOne of the most notable is undoubtely Town’s 5-1 win at Upton Park in a snowbound FA Cup third-round replay in January 1960.Denis Law and Les Massie in action in the famous FA Cup win at West HamWhile West Ham’s players slipped and struggled on the frozen surface – the teams had drawn 1-1 at Leeds Road with Denis Law on target for Town – Town’s players wore rubber-soled boots, similar to training shoes, on the recommendation of caretaker manager Eddie Boot.Town went 2-0 up in 20 minutes through headers from Les Massie and Bill McGarry and, while Malcolm Musgrove pulled one back for the Hammers, Massie scored his second goal a minute before half time.Two minutes into the second half, Town went 4-1 ahead when Law put Jack Connor through to score, and the same player rounded it off with a fine individual goal.Law was in inspired form and, only two months later, he moved on to Manchester City for a then British record fee.Boot was rewarded for his ingenuity – Town had two goals ruled out for offside as they completely outclassed West Ham on the day – by being made permanent manager.

Best forward of the sixties, He could shoot with both feet, head, chip or lob the GK, do banana shots and bicycle kicks. If a defender wanted to kick the fuck out of him he didn't go missing and gave as good as he got. (I remember Ian Ure and him both being sent off) He was a complete player. Best of all though, he scored a back-heel goal which as good as relegated Man Utd. Much better team player than Best or Charlton.

Scotland doesn't produce that calibre of player any more after Andy Irving and Robert Snodgrass who has there been?

I saw Law in the flesh quite a few times including when as a 9 year old I saw him playing for the Rest of the World v England at Wembley in ‘63.
Despite playing and living in England for much of his life he seemed to have quite a dislike of us, so much so deliberately played a round of golf so that he could avoid seeing the ‘66 World Cup final.
