I saw Thin Lizzy on the Thunder and Lightning tour (Hammersmith Odeon).
John Sykes was a weird fit for them but it really worked - with Lizzy it had to with all that harmony guitar playing.
The encores where all the old guitarists, Snowy White excepted, came on do their guest spots were superb fun and nice goodbye present from the band.

I just listened to the 87 whitesnake album for the first time in literally decades. It was a favourite of my older brother rather than me but the memories came flooding back.

I'd forgotten just how good Sykes was. His work in whitesnake and thin lizzy is a treasure trove of killer riffs.

One of, if not the best of his era. He loved a pinch harmonic didn't he.

You could play several life times and not get anywhere near as good.

Yea Bungo, didn't know at all he'd been ill, sounds like the cunty big C :-(

He was brilliant, knew a bit about him from Tygers, but Lizzy.

Changed their sound to a more heavier direction,

Cold Swat!

RIff/Harmonic beast!

I  remember when he joined Lizzy and they came out with Thunder and Lightning which was a definite change of (heavy) direction. He certainly inspired me to learn how to play many of those songs.

I presume he's been ill for a while?

RIP John.
