West Ham vs Southampton | PL | 19.4.25 | Predictions & Match Thread

So it's the worst team in the league against the 4th worst team in the league...should be a cracker!

It would be very West Ham to scrape a 1-1 draw, or even worse, fall to a scrappy 1-0 defeat, but I'm hopeful we'll be better than that.

Prediction: 2-0

Expect Potter to go for a ball playing lineup, all be it not what we would like.
Areola

Wan Bissaka Todibo Kilman Scarles

Soler JWP Paqueta

Bowen Kudus Guilherme
Would obviously like to see Füllkrug start, but sounds like he won't be risked. Can't much see the point in giving Ferguson any game time since we know he's not staying...so hoping rather than Soucek coming in, he gives Guilherme the nod.

COYI.

4/10 is very generous.

I'd have given Lopegui 3/10 before Potter came in. I'd probably have to give that a rethink, given Potter has performed worse than him.

Shocking performance.....substitutions were unreal.....Mavopanos/Salor/Kilman/Kudus/Paqueta/Todibo/Ings should all fuck off....
Scarles not yet upto Prem standard.

Potter so far 4/10

Still not sure if I can be bothered renewing......

Exactly it's the obvious choice but far too decisive and brave for Greyham.

We scored a goal, and then the next goal kick we just shoot the ball long: We don’t try to play football anymore. We don’t push up any more – we just sink.

Half of the team try to score again and the other half just defend very deep. And that’s not the way to works. we have to find a togetherness.

The last half hour at least saw Southampton (SOUTHAMPTON!) comfortably play the ball through midfield & wide with all our players loafing 20m off the ball being bypassed like training cones
Lack of effort, lack of urgency.
Shocking but not surprising

Luckily Ipswich & Leicester can’t win or we’d deservedly be going down
If Leicester don’t beat Liverpool they can’t catch us
If Ipswich lose to Arsenal it’s 15 pts with 5 to play & at least 17 goals
Shall we book the open top bus?

Another poor performance. I can't say I have seen any real difference in the performances under Moyes last season, Lopetegui or Potter this.  My conclusion is that its the players that are crap and it seems Fullkrug agrees with me.

Wan Bissaka and Bowen aside (although despite scoring, even he wasn't great today), I don't think there is a single player in this first team squad that I would be upset if they were sold. Unfortunately, though, we probably only have enough resources to replace about half of them. And with Sullivan back in direct charge of transfers, I fear the worst for next season.  Sullivan is probably already plotting which manager he will need to bring to save us from relegation.

I thought JWP was the worst player today. Slow, negative, plays back or sideways, absolute waste of space. Our whole central midfield of Soler, JWP, Soucek and Alvarez is what makes the team so poor

The German did not need to tell us  who were there what goes on because we saw it in plain sight, yet again.

Southampton were the better team on the day, a team that is trying not to be the worst in EPL history, a team that has scored at less that a goal a game and conceded more than two a game in this season’s league more or less outplayed us for the majority of this game.

To set us up to defend a 1-0 lead in the later stages against the worst team in the league with the worst scoring record is nothing short of negligent.
Potter  cannot be trusted to spend tens of millions on new players in the summer so will have to be removed by the end of the season.
But even if he does go we’ll still be saddled with the porn dwarf and as long as he’s here we’re stuck with medeocrity.

Oh, and by the way, I am sick of the sight of JWP. Sideways backward, sideways backward. That’s all he fucking does.  I was pleased to see the back of him last summer and I wish he’d never returned.
I'm near the Bobby Moore first half and see it constantly, the ball goes to him he doodles out with it like he's running in treacle there are passes on for us to get up the pitch. He's going so slow already yet he'll stop look left.. Look right.. Then go a few more yards and pass the ball that he should have done 5 seconds earlier with Southampton back in a low block shape and no room for us to attack so the recipient has no space in front of him so has to turn and pass back or sideways, rinse and repeat.. Hard to start an attack when the tempo is set so slow.

I have a hunch several of them know they aren’t here next season for one reason or another. Some of them are just not very good as well.

Take what we can get for Kudus, Alvarez, Paqueta and Soucek. JWP can stay as backup or let go if anyone wants him.

The only positive about today's sorry affair is Fullkrug's interview it needed to be said and he delivered.

I cannot see Potter being removed / replaced before next season as Sullivan wont want to pay off two managers and their staff in one season. He will, like others, hope a transfer window and pre season can result in a turn around.  So its ok to say Potter’s not the answer etc ( he certainly does not seem to be from what we’ve seen and decisions he’s made, tactics used ), we now have to look at where we go next.

All our hopes now centre around the summer transfer window.  That somehow, Kyle Macaulay has identified the right targets that will address the obvious weaknesses in the team and squad. On top if this, we have to hope that Sullivan will approve and can then secure the targets.  Finally, and assuming that Potter is going to continue with, what in opinion is a somewhat dated, controlled possession  tactical set up, that the players that we get have the talent, capabilities and as important, attitude and mind set needed to transform us as a squad and team almost in spite of how Potter seems to want us to play.

Throw into the challenge, the need to raise the required funds from sales of Kudus, Soucek, Aguerd, Emerson, Alvarez etc and even an optimist would surely say the odds look to be against us seeing a big turnaround in performances and results. Because thats what we need. A turnaround on the scale seen at Forest.

I just cannot see how that can happen with everything that has to be done and be done correctly. We rarely if ever get transfer business right. Sullivan leading negotiations just screams failure.

I can only foresee a relegation struggle or relegation itself at this juncture. An uncomfortable truth 🥴😔

If we can't beat the bottom club and arguably the worst club in premiership history just who are we going to beat ?

I can't remember leaving a game so angry. I was happy with Potter's appointment, and although disappointed recently have been content to give him the summer and next season. But he's lost me now. He made, what, 5 substitutions, and every one of them made us weaker. He took off all three of our starting forwards, so presumably was happy to hang on to the 1-0. We sat back letting Southampton, of all teams, put us under pressure. Even at 1-0 I considered the afternoon a waste of my time and money.
If this is what we have to look forward to next season, I consider myself an complete idiot to have already renewed. West Ham these days is a squalid little fiefdom run by a horrible little man who will never lead this club to anything good.
If our players had put in the effort the Southampton players did they would have won comfortably. But there was no desire, no urgency - not for any part of the game. They can all fuck off. It's indefensible and I'm just fed up with it.

Fullkrug is right. We were shit. That was a team there for the taking but we incessantly played backwards sideways passes and didn’t even try to progress the ball with any sort of urgency. The ONE time we did it we scored. Two passes. Easy.

centre of midfield is killing us. JWP and Soler spend most of their time facing our goal just touching it back to central defenders. Like they are expecting a press that doesn’t come. I can live with that against a rabid press but today even with five yards of space they’d just one touch knock it back. It’s like they are scared to play it forward. Ideally a centre back should be stepping up and playing that role and the CMs should be 10-15 yards higher in gaps.

we just lacked any sort of urgency at all with the ball. It was almost all jogging and no sprints or quickness. It’s just bizarre. Like we refused to go for it. All game.
