‘The transfer didn’t work’: Niclas Fullkrug’s agent says West Ham exit ‘makes sense’

By Dan Kilpatrick

West Ham United striker Niclas Fullkrug’s agent says it would “make sense” for the 32-year-old to leave the club.

Fullkrug signed a four-year deal with West Ham in August 2024 after arriving from Borussia Dortmund on the back of an eye-catching European Championship with the German national team.

But he started just six Premier League games in an injury-hit first season at the club, scoring three times, and is yet to find the net in seven appearances this term.

Speaking on the TOMorrow Business Podcast, Fullkrug’s representative Thorsten Wirth said the forward was “basically made for the Premier League” but acknowledged that the transfer had been a failure.

“Looking back, we have to say the transfer didn’t work out,” Wirth said. “There’s no point in sugarcoating it.”

Asked if Fullkrug should leave England, Wirth replied: “This always has to happen in cooperation with the club, but I believe it can make sense to change something there.”

Fullkrug was twice sidelined for nearly three months last season, first with an achilles tendon problem and then with a hamstring injury.

He is currently out with a muscle injury, which has ruled him out of West Ham’s last three games, and Wirth admitted that injuries have been a factor in his struggles to impress in east London.

“Time and again, at a point where you said: Now he’s coming, now he’ll show England that it wasn’t just a good European Championship and then nothing more will come of it – another injury came along, and that’s a shame,” he said. “He had a bit of a negative momentum and also some bad luck.”

Asked about Fullkrug’s current injury ahead of Sunday’s 3-1 win over Newcastle United, West Ham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said: “I’m still not totally sure when he will be available. He started on the grass but not totally with the group, so we expect it’s going to be fast.”

In April last year, Fullkrug made headlines after accusing his teammates of having a “mindset problem” in a fiery post-match interview with Sky Sports following a 1-1 draw with bottom-club Southampton.

“I’m very, very angry that we played like this because we had some minutes where we showed what we can do against an opponent like that at home,” he said. “We showed that we can have good possession, that we can go in-behind and that we have the chances to score again. But the motivation… sorry, we were s**t. I’m very angry.”

West Ham ready to make move to sign Oscar Mingueza

Image

West Ham United are reportedly prepared to make a move to sign Celta Vigo star Óscar Mingueza, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Hammers have endured a dire start this season, languishing in the relegation zone. So, the club’s hierarchy decided to dismiss Graham Potter and appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as the new manager.

The East London club earned their first Premier League victory of the season in the third game week, before securing their second win against Newcastle United on Sunday, two months later.

West Ham displayed signs of improvement in this fixture, and if they can maintain this level, they have a good chance of securing the top-flight status at the end of this season.

Meanwhile, West Ham have conceded 21 goals thus far this season, and only the bottom team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, have leaked more.

So, Fichajes state that Santo is prioritising reinforcing the defensive department in January, and West Ham have identified Mingueza as a serious option.

Mingueza to West Ham

The Spaniard has a £17m release clause in his current contract, but the Hammers are willing to spend around £7m to seal the deal. Celta Vigo might be open to accepting the offer, as the defender’s existing deal will expire at the end of this season.

They want to tie him down to a fresh term but have failed to do that so far. Mingueza joined the Galician club from Barcelona, and they have a 50% sell-on clause. So, they have been monitoring his situation closely.

The Spanish outlet report that Atalanta have also registered their interest in Mingueza and are ready to table a formal proposal similar to West Ham’s but including add-ons.

Mingueza is a versatile player as he is comfortable in the centre-back position as well as the right-back role. Moreover, he can provide cover in the RWB position if needed. He is quick, technically sound, and comfortable in playing out from the back.

The 26-year-old is currently at the prime stage of his career and could be a shrewd acquisition for West Ham should they eventually manage to secure his service in the upcoming winter transfer window.
