To be fair to Cloughie, back in those days the difference between first and second division was very slight. You could just about slip a cigarette paper between the two. 

If you knew how to stick the ball in the back of the net then it wasn't really a huge step up to make. A lot of teams who won the second division would often have the momentum to go again in the following season and challenge for the first division title and in a few cases, some even won it! 

They do have to narrow it down to keep Shearer at the top
Obviously Greaves scored more top flight goals
And Vic Watson had many more goals at a better rate even though most were in Div2
 

Seeing as Clough only scored ONE single solitary goal in the top flight he'd have probably had to play into his 40s to have beaten Shearer's record.

OK fair enough, it's still very good stats though.

Yeah, you're missing the fact that Clough played all but a few games in the old 2nd division, so not really comparable to players like Greaves.
