Diouf is obviously not great defensively, but he was up against arguably the best right sided duo in the league, away from home, with Summerville as defensive help. He'll have easier games. At 20 years old, it's no surprise he struggled.

Much better to judge him in the next one now we're defending better as a team.

Dioufs like the majority of fullbacks nowadays, very good at going forward but a lot of questions over his defensive abilities, even Trent has his doubters, Madrid didn’t buy him for his defensive qualities. It’s fine if your playing for someone like Liverpool, Man City who will have  the majority of possession, but where we are at the moment it’s a different thing.

Agree Massive, Diouf had a mare yesterday.

Apart from that my biggest concern is Magassa, Paqueta and Fullkrug/Wilson.
Unless Sullivan buys quality in Janu, we are doomed

Yep that was the one positive from yesterday.

In hindsight, we might have been better starting KWP on the right and AWB on the left for this one.  At this time, with Diouf so young and new to the league, both are better defenders.  Most of our problems came down Diouf’s flank.  But thats hindsight for you 🤭

Dioufs a funny one because I absolutely love what he does going forward but have kittens at times defensively about his game. It strikes me as a potentially quality Wing Back but we don't play that way or have the right Squad to really play that way regularly. So he's a bit of a conundrum for us. Hopefully either his defensive gamw can be worked on or we do somehow adapt more to a wingback set up in time including him. Intrigued to see how it develops..

If you are going to persevere with Paqueta you need others around him to do the extra work
Having a midfield with him Soucek & JWP ( both plodders) gets you the results Potter got

He'd have been dropped months ago at any other club.

People said pretty much the same things about Kudus when he was with us. Now he's match winning for Spurs. You can coach decision making, build a team around a player, give them a free role etc.. but actual "skills", you either have it or you dont. Paq has it. Thats why you have to hold on to these players and find a way to get the best out of them. There are a handful of players on earth that can do what Paq can do at this level. We have to persevere with him.

In the modern game if you don’t have physicality or movement as a midfielder you need to have exceptional skills & ability to retain the ball plus an eye for an exceptional pass
Players like Modric, David Silva etc
Paqueta has talent but is a risk with the ball and prone to mistakes
In our state not sure we can indulge that luxury without more effective output

I was again disappointed by Paqueta. I look to him as a player that can play at the same level or better than Arsenal, but he doesn't do much with the ball. Doesn't take it forward. He is so static, kind of turns on himself to shield the ball, but often turns in to another opposition player and loses it. Or makes a short pass that doesn't help us with the attacking and just passed the pressure to a different perhaps less capable player. Usually ending up in going backwards to a hoof upfield by defence or Areola, which resulted in giving the back back to Arsenal.
All a bit crap and starting wonder when or against who Paqueta will improve.

I like how he mentioned it being difficult to put a young player like Marshall on instead of Wilson, or words to that effect, but it needed to be done to see what options we have and what they can do in games.

Under all the recent managers, Wilson would've been thrown on, 100%. That's a positive for me moving forward.

As said previously though, we need to see a different performance against Brentford.

I’m actually impressed with Nuno’s press conference after tbh.
He’s actually explaining why he’s doing stuff instead of just waffling like Potter. He also realises that he has to get game time in for the youngsters because how the fuck else do you get them ready for this league?
Thats the thing that annoyed me a lot about our previous managers. Expecting U21’s to just come in and do well. Or play them like Scarles and then drop them completely. It’s very fucked up.
According to Marshall Nuno doesn’t like us sitting off and wants to press teams. Maybe not so high up but definitely not a low block don’t have the ball thing. So I’m hoping to see a more aggressive game from us as the season goes on.
Nuno also pointed out that arteta has had 300 games with a very drilled, expensively assembled Arsenal side. Anyone expecting much more than we got at theirs is being silly.

there are moments we could have changed things if fullkrug didn’t miss etc. but our XG says it all. We may have won against Arsenal in recent times but we’ve never outplayed them.
in fact, my whole problem with West Ham even under Moyes is that we may have sucker punched teams but rarely outplayed them. Thats the long term change we need.

going in on the football, I don't know the manager but this approach isn't much different to the jock & potter. if we have another bloke with an inferiority complex that doesn't trust his players, we're going down
We'll see mate, but I'm leaning on looking at the Everton performance rather than yesterday, and i enjoyed it. He's been at the club for a week, we were getting battered in games, we don't look like that so far, and set piece defending has dramatically improved.

If we play like that against Brentford at home, then we have reason to worry. But overall in any season, we are going to lose games to teams like Arsenal away in tbat fashion, I expect us to get right at Brentford. Let's hope so.

No goals conceded from crosses or set pieces. Second one likely wouldn’t have been given as a pen under other circumstances because it looked like first contact was outside the box.

He is learning about the players. Who can do what & what can he use them for
It won’t happen in a week in a match away to the best team in the league
Did anyone think he could take Potters beaten squad & turn them around in a week?
The start is better defending & being harder to beat

I thought we did alright. We looked much more disciplined defensively. Shame about the penalty as they would have got nervous if it had stayed 1-0 much longer. Their crowd is like a rugby crowd. We were quite noisy. Best bit of the day was serenading Ginger Pele in our section with “Ten more years etc.” He seemed to enjoy it and it utterly confused their late-to-football know nothing fans.

Yes, good to see Potts & Marshall after Potter’s snubbing
Would like to see Fearon & Kante at some point to add energy

The u21’s drew 2-2 at Arsenal yesterday denied by a 93rd min equaliser

They’re top and we’re second from bottom. With Guardiola in charge it would be a big ask to expect to get anything given the players we have. Arguably the best player we had is now destroying teams for Spurs, thanks Sullivan you cսnt( hope he got grief during the game like Monday night). The next three games will give us a better idea of what Nuno is all about.

We have also conceded the most, have the worst goal difference and can barely score with our confidence shot to fucking bits after the shocking start Potter left us in. It'll take some time for this group of players to get over their PTSD (Potter Traumatic Stress Disorder). Yet some are expecting us to somehow be bang at it straight away causing them serious problems with limited time to get to grips with it all, when in reality that was never going to be the case. They're top of the League and we are virtually bottom, if not are by the end of today, for very good reason.

I still believe Arsenal will choke winning the League this season and will revel in it should they do so. It'll be down to Artetas failure again to get them over the line when it really matters most like it has in previous seasons going for the Title.

As for playing Arsenal in their current state compared to us, some are making it sound easy to play aggressively against them at their place riding high, on the front foot. They are seriously good, well drilled and very difficult to break down with endless dangerous players going forward. That Team/Squad is one of the best in Europe, let alone in England having conceded the least (3) and scoring the most (14) so far this season. Not even Man City these days take it to Arsenal and give them the utmost most respect because of many threats they have at set piece and in attack. Stats very similar to ours bar the clinical efforts on goal due mainly to the freak Haaland.

I don't like Potter but I will give him the credit for producing a win and clean sheet against the odds and can understand why we would set up similar today with limited time and knowledge dealing with the Squad in Nunos 1st week at West Ham.

For some added context, Newcastle played similarly to us last weekend. Only 35% possession at home. A few corners though. They scored from one of 3 chances and spent the game with 9 or 10 behind the ball.  Arsenal dominated completely.

We needed a forward yesterday as a out ball but also, amd cant believe Im saying this, more mobility, pace, strength in midfield as a unit.  Nuno mentioned us needing more mobility when in possession. Not sure how he fixes that.

But the point is our inability to compete may well be shared by a lot of teams this season. Imo Arsenal will finally win the title this season (annoyingly)  have the leagues strongest squad and team.  We need to improve but upcoming games will tell us much more about Nuno’s West Ham. That said, we will need a striker and another central midfielder in Jan imo.
