Boundary of the East End used to be the river Lea up until 1965. Anywhere east of there was Essex, including West Ham. Arguably it was never an East End club and was always an Essex club.

Personally I never got the affiliation with Essex that people feel in what is now East London. Also their repellence towards the idea of themselves as Londoners. But perhaps that's because unlike all my family who were born east of the river Lea, I was born in Hackney. So I have the opposite sentiments despite spending a good deal of my formative years in Essex proper.

The sentient people of Havering will not want to give up their freedom passes so don’t automatically assume there will be a majority voting to leave and become part of Essex.

And what sticks in the craws of older people in Havering is where they live being called east London.
