West Ham agree deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes

By David Ornstein and Jacob Tanswell

West Ham have agreed a deal for Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

The deal is set to be worth £38million ($51.3m) with £3m worth of add-ons and a 15 per cent sell-on clause.

The 21-year-old Portugal youth international will be West Ham’s sixth signing of the summer, with the London side also in talks to sign midfielder Soungoutou Magassa from Monaco.

Fernandes joined Southampton in the summer of 2024 from Sporting CP and has made 46 appearances for the south-coast side that got relegated last season, scoring four goals and registering seven assists. He has played 36 times for Portugal’s youth teams up to under-21 level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.

Southampton were relegated from the Premier League last season with seven games still to play, only a year after their promotion.

West Ham have lost their opening three games of the 2025-26 season, two in the Premier League and one against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. They are next in action away to Nottingham Forest on Sunday in the league.

Can't say it makes sense, or that i've seen much of him.......but fuck me our season relies on this lad being half decent

Just been reading through this thread, a lot of debate.. But he's been an absolute cracking signing and I'd say at 21 he's our most valuable asset by a very long way.

Good ball carrier, good tackler and intercepter and can create chances, even scores bow and then.  Will Potter start him?  Its not certain.  Cant see getting anything at Forest anyway. Chris Wood will have a field day.

Did the lad have to change agents to get through the door?

No one has any idea if we've overpaid for the lad.

If he comes in, tears it up, looks our best player, and wins HOTY, then it's peanuts.

Let's wait to see him play. Too many cunts DESPERATE for our new players to fail.

That’s it. We got ourselves into a position where we were going to have to pay a bit over the odds for someone. Not a lot else we could do really. It could have been far worse. I actually think given 50 mill quoted we didn’t get as hosed as we could have for Fernandes.

Maybe we’ve paid about £10m over the odds, but I’m happy with this type of signing. If we get Magassa too, that will be two 21 year olds. Suddenly we have a young energetic team.

If we manage to get a young forward, commanding centre back and sell Aguerd for £30m, I might just knock one out.

Given Potter’s system doesn’t allow for Bowen to play in his best position, which is also Elliot’s best position, I can’t see much value in spending the £40m there instead.

You've done nothing but moan, whinge & cry since your very first post, Creepy son.

Fuck knows what you'd have been like had you ever been to a West Ham game, especially when things were really bad. Mike Newell & Ian Moore up front, you would have had to overdose on your HRT tablets.

Fuck off weirdo decent, keep on posting shit about our defenders instead. You seem to be good at that. Calling others drama queens is quite funny and ironic

I know far from everything but it just takes a few minutes of research. Though I really didn't need research to know an 8 box to box type midfielder is more what we need over an Elliot type.

Ok Fraser, I suppose you know everything needed to know of all those players. I'm not questioning that.
I'm just saying, that the club are in more need of attacking midfielders, and Elliot would been my pick.

We've needed legs in midfield for ages everyone has been moaning about it... A box to box midfielder which I believe he is and now you would rather an attacking midfielder?
Magassa looks to me like a player giving us those legs in midfield you point at.
We have close to none attacking midfielders at the club, so I definitely would spend that 40m elsewhere.
Mugassa is more a defensive player not so good on the ball but good at winning it by all accounts. He was a cb who know plays as a DM
