Maybe I’m showing my lack of knowledge about the band but as someone who’s not hugely into them, I’d say The Cure

A lot of people would say Bon Jovi but that does overlook Ritchie Sambora’s talent as a guitarist.  I personally felt Bon Jovi was a waste of his talent and he should have been in a better band. 
 

Most people would say this about Adam and the Ants, but that overlooks Marco Pirroni’s contribution to the songwriting and Chris Hughes’ expertise as a drummer and producer. 

Although I’m not into The The, weren’t they essentially Matt Johnson’s vehicle?

I think Rainbow and Hawkwind must be the ultimate examples of this. 

UFO also went through a few years of being essentially Phill Mogg’s band
