Evening Standard David Moyes reveals West Ham’s secret weapon in Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez deals By Malik Ouzia David Moyes has revealed the role played by new assistant coach Johnny Heitinga in the signing of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez from Ajax this summer. Both players swapped Amsterdam for east London this summer in deals worth a combined total of more than £70million. Former Netherlands defender Heitinga trod a similar path, joining Moyes’s revamped backroom team having played under the Scot at Everton and then begun his coaching career in the Ajax set-up. “I met Johnny in the summer a couple of times before I brought him in,” Moyes said. “I’d had some meetings him but I was also asking him about the Ajax players and what might be there. “I didn’t know I was going to end up getting them because they were two lads on our list of recruitment. We were keen on getting Joao Palhinha from Fulham and we didn’t get him. We were obviously looking to see who we could try and get after that. James Ward-Prowse was high on my list no matter what. “But I was able to talk to Johnny about Edson and then Mo when he started to become a consideration. Steven Pienaar has been at Ajax as well and he was one of my ex-players [at Everton] so I phoned him about them too.” While Alvarez has become an instant hit in Moyes’s first-choice side, Kudus arrived later in the window and has so far been restricted to starts in the cup competitions, as well as substitute cameos in the Premier League. Moyes confirmed, however, that the Ghanaian is in contention to start when Sheffield United visit the London Stadium on Sunday and offered insight into how he plans to use a player whose versatility has been talked up as one of his key attributes. “Mo’s ready, I’ve got no doubt about that,” Moyes said. “I think he was ready when he came, he wasn’t needing games he wasn’t needing training, he’d done all that. He’s ready and when we see the right opportunities and moments we’ll use him. “I see him playing several different positions but he’s probably another midfield player for us, another No10. We’ve got a lot of competition in that position at the moment and he can play off the sides. He’s played centre-forward as well. “There’s little bits of all those we can use if we need to but probably where we see him most is around No10 or one of three midfield players.” The 4th Official West Ham United Are Keeping Tabs On This Talented Forward: One For The Future? In a recent report, Fichajes revealed that West Ham United are keeping tabs on Botafogo forward Matheus Nascimento. It has been stated that the Hammers are monitoring the Brazilian striker’s progress and could move in for him next year. Nascimento’s Impressive Rise In Brazilian Football Nascimento has already proven his worth as a valuable presence in Botafogo’s senior team. He has made a total of 81 appearances for the Brazilian club thus far, finding the back of the net on 11 occasions and picking up four assists in all competitions. The Brazilian whizkid has seen most of his playing opportunities come as a substitute this season which explains why he is only averaging 0.8 shots and 0.5 key passes per game in the Brasileirao. However, he needs to improve his ball distribution in the final third as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 73.3% in the Brazilian first division (stats via whoscored). His current contract at the Brazilian club will expire at the end of 2025. Hence, West Ham could potentially land him on a cut-price deal next year. West Ham United Are Keeping Tabs On Nascimento: Is He A Prospect For The Future? Nascimento can create some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He can be a streaky goal-scorer in the final third when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. The Brazilian forward can even create the odd chance for others around him in the opposition half. He is primarily a centre-forward but can also function as a secondary striker or play in the number ten position if told to do so by his manager. However, there are some concerns over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Premier League football. Nascimento is already good enough to serve as an important member of West Ham boss David Moyes’ match-day squad. He has what it takes to become a regular starter at the London Stadium in the future. At 19, Nascimento is undeniably a prospect to watch out for in the coming seasons. Hence, the Hammers would be wise to try everything they can to lure him to the English capital when the transfer window reopens this January or at the end of this campaign."
