Must Watch - Bobby Moore

Post Timmy Breacker »

"https://youtu.be/hmu61ZgAblw?si=Jp0CIOviUQUJ8OpX This is an absolutely sensational watch. I was born in 81, so it's well before my time (unless you count Escape To Victory which came out when i was 29 days old). I had seen the famous clips from the 66 and 70 world cups many, many times and a smattering of WHU clips from over the years, but........fuck me, what a footballer. My old man started going in 66, so has always told me that he was the number one. Difficult to disagree watching this."

"Wow what a great video. So much footage I've never seen before. What a player. Our very own legend. Was that England playing Poland , England wearing blue shirts white shorts, blue socks? Thanks for sharing"

Some of those tackles woud be given as fouls in todays game. It seems tackles where the opposing player falls over are given by referees in todays pansy game.

"That's how you should coach defending, if indeed it can be coached, making a challenge and 95% of the time coming away in control of the ball. Can't think of anyone with a better reading of the game and if in trouble at all it was telling that Geoff Hurst was always the out ball. The other three defenders must have all been total crap considering West Ham always conceded lots of goals!"

"What a great watch that was, thanks for posting it. Seriously, has a better centre half ever played the game? Theirs always been talk of Franz Beckenbauer, but was he better? He maybe won more titles but for me Moore was the greatest centre half ever to have played the game. Some of those highlights are unreal, he actually had a touch whilst going into a tackle, like win the ball and kill it dead at the same time, get up, play the ball out the back and then find a killer pass, you just didn’t see that back then or indeed nowadays. He basically took liberties in his own area, his touch and skill for a defender was outrageous. I doubt greenwood & Ramsey coached him to play that way, they must have thought, wow, just let him get on with it. What a crying shame his club and country didn’t look after him when he was alive, terrible that a man of his stature wasn’t treated the way he deserved, you’ll never see the likes of him again. Northern sold would love this footage, anyone know how he is? he’d normally be all over a thread like this."

Saw most of his career from 1960 onwards apart from the matches they always show you can remember he kept us up almost single handedly on his own when we narrowly just escaped relegation. Also saw him get terrible stick whenever we played away but universally he overcame that and got recognised as the greatest defender bar none.

Loved the Jack Charlton quote that he was the slowest player he ever played with.

"I never saw him live... but he is the reason I support West Ham (I grew up in Birmingham)... Not seen this many clips of him and what you realise is how he almost without fail once he'd made a tackle came out with the ball, made yards and found a player with a great pass. He was the perfect modern day defender before they were even thought of as a thing... His ball retention in these situations was unbelievable.. he perfected the Scotty Parker turn before Parker was even born. Great video.."

"It's incredible the amount of clips of immaculate defending, given that the footage is probably taken from about 30 games. The clips from the Brazil 1970 game are mindblowing really."

"This is brilliant. As a 9-year-old at my first game in 1962 my dad told me to watch Bobby Moore, and I've been smitten ever since. It's not so much that he's ""better than you think"" (as per the clip's title), more that he's every bit as good as his legend. No rose-tinted glasses needed here."
